It turns out that the latches on the floor bins on our trucks are just a marine/RV slam latch and you can get locking ones for around $12 each from Amazon, eBay, etc. (as opposed to the $100+ Mopar ones).

Disclaimer: I did not come up with this idea myself. I saw it on a forum somewhere. I cannot recall where, but the original poster just used a slam latch and cut up the bin liner to add a new catch point for the deeper latch. I did not want to do that so I merged the new locking latch with the original latch.

Original latch on the left, new one on the right:

And the same from the side. You can see the issue, the latch piece on the new one is deeper and narrower than on the original.

Both the old and new latches are held together with a simple roll pin. It was the work of only a moment with a punch and a small hammer to disassemble each.

Original, disassembled;

New, disassembled:

I used the latch piece and spring from the original and the rest from the new one. You don't have to swap the springs, but the original was a stiffer spring and I preferred that.

Reassembled:

And installed in the truck.

just bought 2 of the latches too. I may not use them a lot, but I like having the option.

I'm not going to trust this to lock to hold like Ft Knox, but it might help deter the quick thief. Swapped my driver side this morning. Mine came keyed alike which is nice. Not sure if they all come like that.

edit- swapped both out. took longer to drive out the roll pin than it did to swap the latches and reinstall in the truck.

Way easy install. The most difficult part of the project was re-installing the roll pin after the latch swap. I too used the OEM spring as it seemed a bit heavier than the supplied one.

Anyone moderately determined will get right through it, but it's better than nothing.

Great write up as usual. Been thinking about doing the metal lockable doors but this may do instead.

Does anyone know if the door can be replaced, I tore the door off the second day I had this 16 powerwagon seems very cheap to me, plastic hinge, now I just set the door down to cover the hole so no one sticks there foot thru the floormat...

Big thanks to you for the write-up Keith (@kad )!

I was able to use the same parts and swap out the latches on my 5th Gen 1500 as well. Kudos!
