Do you have anything in your hitch receiver?

I leave my hitch in at all times. I got rear ended twice in one week in my old ram and both times the car that hit me took some pretty severe damage to their front end and all that happened to the truck was a scratched hitch.

Not a good pic, but this is the same one that protected me in the old truck.

Leaving the hitch in the receiver when not towing is illegal here in Mass. You have to take it out. I think it is to prevent damage to other cars, and because people walk into them in parking lots (it really hurts, don't ask me how I know...).

If I want to put my truck in the garage, I can't leave it on, the door won't close with the hitch in.

I've got a step-up installed when I'm not towing.... but hard to use a step up when the tailgate is open ;) HOWEVER, it sticks out about 12 inches and provides a buffer for when someone slow rolls into my rear end... no damage to my truck, but really messed up their plastic bumper

This cover came with the Draw tite receiver when I bought it. I always thought about installing a receiver bumper/step to protect the truck from distracted drivers but I haven't yet.

I don't tow anything, but I do pull a lot of trees out of the woods to keep the home fires burning. My receiver will come off the truck before this 2 1/2" receiver shackle gets damaged ;)
