do you use a radar detector?

Where I'm living there is both radar and laser in use. I know mine's saved me from a couple of tickets when I'm not paying attention and doing 15-20kmh over like everyone else when the sheriffs pull over the entire column except me.

I have the valentine one can't go wrong with it the best radar in the market

I stand behind you 100%. I've had the Valentine with the new POP for the longest time. It sure is nice with the arrows being able to know the direction their coming from too. I put a 9500ix in wifey's ride because I picked one up on sale. Radars is one of them things you don't skimp on, because you really do get what you pay for on them. The Valentine 1 and 9500ix are the only two I'd feel comfortable riding with. I can tell you the 9500ix and the V1 both have different advantages. I've rode with them in the same car and in separate cars for years. Both perform extremely well in radar detection. The 9500ix fale alerts on doors a lot less than the Valentine. I programmed my V1 to filter out the x bands on doors, which helps, but still gives a few false k's from Walgreens, etc. However, on the highway, the V1 is more sensitive to lasers. It nearly scares me to death when I here the laser alert Jolt because I know when it goes off and I look up, I expect to see highway patrol 100% of the time. As far as radar detection, again both the 95 and the V1 will pick them up from a mile or two away. We've never had a speeding ticket or any kind of ticket with neither, but recently cut out speeding all together and went to the saving gas and saving my ass trick. ;) The GPS that came with me on my New Windows Phone beeps at me everytime I nudge over the speed limit, I can set it to beep if I go 1 mph over all the way up to like 20 mph over. And boy it's dead on the money every time. I took a 45 minute trip this weekend, with three beeps telling me I nudged over the speed limit 3 times. In my books if you speed, you're always taking a risk. But there are tools to help lower that risk and many of the high end ones work. But if you don't want a ticket obey the law and you don't have to worry about it. :party28:

First off, to be clear there are 2 types of threats: radar and laser. A radar detector is going to save you in most cases from police using radar. A radar detector will pick up laser signals as well, but lasers work by line of sight so 9/10 times if your detector goes off with a laser warning it's too late. It seems like there is also a 3rd threat that uses newer technology as well, but I can't recall what that is. It's not widely used like radar and laser though. Typically most local police use radar, unless they are using speed traps. Highway patrol can vary.

I have a Passport 8500, hardwired in. Yes it's always on when I'm driving my truck, but you still have to be smart driving. I've only found myself with 1 speeding ticket, and that was in a speed trap, and they were using laser. Hard to talk your way out of going 11 over.

To defend against lasers, there is something called laser shifters. Escort makes it and combined with an Escort radar detector, they had some deal going that if you got a ticket with this combo, they would pay it. I don't know if they still offer that (I doubt it), but that's how confident they were that the combo of their radar detector + laser shifters would work.

I'd recommend an Escort detector, either the 8500, 9500 or the new Max. If I was in the market today, I know I'd spring for the Max. Few to no false signals with a wider range than the 8500. But as long as mine is good, I'll keep with it.

If you go cheap on a radar detector, don't expect it to do much for you.

Awesome, I a member on this site I have the Redline with the updated software I did have mine up high in my 2011 but I don't in my 2014 yet.

I live in new mexico USA i have found that they are perfectly legal in my state but have not found out what the police are using. I'm sure its a combination of both.. i have heard through that a radar detector even if it detects radar that the radar is too fast and you don't have time to slow down..

i would think in town they would use radar but idk...

I was looking into the cobras... does anyone know anything about them? this is one model i seen Cobra ors 9470

Cobra XRS 9470 High Performance Digital Radar/Laser Detector with Voice Alert - Cobra - Car Toys

I recommend Escort or V1.

groupon had the cobras on sale, mine just got delivered today. we have one of those radar speed signs in my town. picked it up from a fair distance(enough to slow down). hwy 75 here usually has quite a bit of cops so i should be able to test it in the next couple days.

did a little reading and i have found one thing out. not sure if its true or not, but some radars the police use can actually tell if you have a radar detector in the car. said somthing about the detector sends out some radio frequency or somthing and the radar gun will actually detect it informing police you have one. now i would only expect those to be used in the areas where it is illegal to have one.

YES. Radars are an awesome thing. Watch out though. My Dad has used Passport radars for a long time and he has gotten caught countless times even with the radar. He has an Audi S5 and he knew that he needed a better radar so he did some research. He ended up buying a radar called the "Valentine One" and when he first installed it we were amazed. The Valentine is the way to go if you're going to buy one. It has given away cops from up to a half a mile away and it even has arrows that point in which direction the cop is. Best radar on the market. Nothing compares and it is definitely worth it's steep price.

It's been a few years ago, but I was busted three times for having a radar detector in VA. I was amazed that they could detect the detector as I had a toggle switch on it and would turn it off whenever a cop got close. The last time I had it turned off and that cop pulled out as I went by and nailed me saying "you have a radar detector". I said I don't have it turned on, he said "it didn't matter". What kind of technology are they using that can ring a detector with it turned off?
I don't use one now as I was getting hit for $165 a pop.

Never have, never will trust one. One of my co-workers spent some ungodly amount on one and it was always going off. In the country with wide open roads I can see it, in the city where there is a DPS, highway patrol, sheriff's dept, local pd pretty much every road or highway you go on, I'll take my chances and go with the flow of traffic on most roads.
