Does SAE 20 W 40 still exist?

Not related to my truck but the manual for an older dirtbike I'm working on says I need SAE 20 W 40 for the transmission. I'm having trouble finding it, is there something else that will replace it?

Most motorcycle dealers should have it. Oddball for most applications, but pretty common on bikes. Most guys just switch to a 15w40 like shell rotella, which some manufactures list as an alternative to the 20w40 provided it meets I believe JASO MA spec. The rotella meets that spec.

Ok thanks. I will just substitute the 15W40.

Must be a yamaha? They want to sell their own oil for bikes and boats and have always sold that, just google yamaha 20w40. It is likely it wont matter and that 15w40 would be good, but sae 30 or 40 or 20w50 may be better if there is a real reason behind it. I don't know the gear box, if there is a reason they want it thick, you may want to use a thicker oil at startup. Those oils have no vii's, 15w40 will likely.

There is another issue, transmisions usually use low phos oil, and yamaha 20w40 boat oil is low phos, likely perfect for that transmision, but using random 15w40 will likely have high phos, another reason to use 20w40, here low phos 20w40.

You do realize there will be no difference between 15w40 and 20w40 until it comes to viscosity at child temperature. It's still a 40 weight oil either way, just the 15 is gonna flow better when cold

Looks like Quicksilver Low Phosphorus Synthetic Motor Oil, SAE 20W-40 is another one if you want synthetic, and they make a 25w40 as well, I believe low phos but you need to check that.

Its for a 1974 Suzuki RV 125. Its for the transmission. I have no idea what any of the oil letters or numbers mean but I know a few guys on here are virtual oil experts. I normally use whatever the manual recommends. I picked up some SAE 20W50. Would that work?

Short answer is I believe it will work fine, because most likely that is a simple gear box as almost everything back there was, Beatifully simple. It wouldn't hurt anything right away anyhow, if you don't like the characteristics after using it just quickly change to yama 20w40.

I was planning on running it for a little while and changing it anyway to try to clean it out because the oil that came out looked pretty bad. Thanks for the replies.
