Does the 6.4 have lifter issues like the 5.7??

New member here...what a discouraging thread. I purchased my '17 with 30,000 miles back in April with the hopes of it lasting 300,000. I was set on a Ford with the 6.2 until my Ram showed up at a local dealership. It was a local trade with an impeccable service history. The price was the icing on the cake when compared to similarly equipped ford and GM trucks.

In the past two months it's been back to the dealership for evap and alignment issues which have yet to be resolved. Now reading about these lifter issues I'm filled with regret. I have no one to blame but myself for not researching these newer hemi engines. My '98 12v has given me 250,000 trouble free miles. Ugh, sorry for the long winded vent session...

I wouldnt let it get you down. Every truck has something that goes out more than others. Every new vehicle is packed with technology that is expensive and can fail. Most guys on here have great service from their trucks. If mine fails I guess I will get rid of mds and be done with it. It's nice knowing what can go bad but it also adds uneasiness as my truck and I'm sure a lot of other people on here, is the most expensive thing they own besides their house

My truck has never had an issue. I have over 70,000 miles now. My 2013 f150 had a lot of issues early on (under 40,000 miles) and I was sour about it for a while but honestly I know of a lot of guys who have great luck with their f150s. Its luck of the draw I reckon.

trust the horns......that ford would have been a POS.

whats up with alignment? truth be told, the best part about solid axles, its literally easier then a lego kit to align your truck.
Caster may be more confusing, but trackbar, tie rod, drag link are all driveway serviceable.
What can the Dealer not figure out?

That all might be true but MDS lifters are unreliable.
but hold on....

is it the lifters? or the valve seats with additional buildup in those specific cylinders?

i assume the wear and buildup is nearly identical for each valve seat and lifter

ALL vehicles are made with recycled garbage materials today.
Like a Bic lighter, you use it up, throw it away. Even get an occassional bad bic lighter. So theres that...

Penzoil ultra platinum 5w-30. Going to go to redline. For no reason other than I want to lol. But mine is good. No ticks or anything weird
That's what I've been using from 26k to 51k miles. 2015 5.7 8spd, 7500 mile or 1 yr oci, wix filter. Mostly highway miles, towing 4k lbs, usually turn off mds

Good discussion. I’m at 23k in my 2018 6.4, been running PUP 0w40 with a Mopar oil filter from day 1.
This is my 3rd ram and I’m a little disappointed I’m starting to get the lifter tick. It’s definitely a different sound from the injectors if you know what your listening for. This time is different from my old 2013 5.7 Tick, it was constant on that truck. This time the tick is intermediate, comes and goes.
I figured the 40w oil was going to eliminate this issue but this clearly is not an oil related problem. This is poor quality parts/part design problem.
So the question is what oil strategy is the best? Thoughts?

There's been a continuous 10k+ BO on the MDS lifters for two years straight and no back orders on the non MDS lifters.

Based on what information? Our 1500 5.7 (84k miles) just had an MDS lifter failure and it was fixed in two days.

uhhhh..what did you say?
I agree, very nice pic indeed!

MDS isn't the problem although I'm not defending it in any way as I only use it at highway speeds. There have been just as many failures on non MDS cylinders as the on MDS cylinders. The problem could be inferior materials, lack of sufficient oil pressure at idle, oil too thin(5W20) or changes to additive pack of most oils since 2013(possibly). Cylinder 5 lifter seized and ate the cam on my 2015 RAM and I'm pretty sure that's not an MDS cylinder. Funny how the earlier non Eagle HEMI's didn't have any cam/lifter failures and many had the MDS system from 2004 on. Just run a high Moly oil such as Redline (5W30 preferably)and you have a damn good chance of not having any problems and remember most motor oils changed dramatically in the additives department after 2013 so you can't go by the old "it worked for my grandpappy for the last 50 years" stuff because things have changed dramatically since then.

my 2014 2500 6.4 has had the lifter noise for a while. sounds like a nasty exhaust leak under any kind of load and rpm. i've been told by 2 different dealerships that it's normal. after camping season is done in october i'll be looking for a 3 opinion. i'm getting tired of hearing it.

I ran mobil 1 5/20 in my 2014 1500 with over priced m1 filter(only way the filter would not leak oil). I did have the exhaust tick fixed on pass side. Driver side started the exhaust tick at 110k right before i traded it in. The motor had no other sounds purred like a kitten and i always left the msd on. Hope my 6.4 goes the same way.

My 2016 with the 6.4 just started the ticking on the passenger side bank. Doesn't do it until it gets warmed up so I am assuming it is an exhaust manifold leak. Broken manifold studs seem to haunt the 5.7 & 6.4. If I had enough $$$ I would throw a set of long tubes in there with all new bolts. I am sure with parts & labor that would set me back about $2,500. Has anyone here repaired a broken stud on a 5.7 or 6.4? I imagine you just about have to pull the whole motor just to get to the damn things!? Then there is the whole drilling thing, easy out (which is usually not that easy) & then re-chase the threads. I am getting a headache just thinking about it!

Yes sir. I wasn't sure if that was the way to go but i stuck to my decision and hoped it all went well. I also ran that in my 98 vett both motors were very quiet and ran very smooth. I was just worried about the gasket swelling thing people talked about. Another thought does anyone think the fact that we have to tighten the oil filters so tight that causes metal shavings or anything in the filter sense the threads are to long and hitting the bottom of a stock size filter. This is why i ran a m1 filter.
