Probably goes without saying, but since the compact spares that are so commonly used aren't always easy to get to, be sure to check them before you need them. One of my colleagues had a blowout at lunch, and as he was telling us about it I noticed his compact spare looked mighty soft. I offered to check it, and it was only 17 PSI when it's supposed to be 60. Fortunately he had parked next to me and I had a 12 volt inflator in my truck, so I filled it back up.
