What are the different Generation years on the 3.0 Eco Diesel? I read people commenting on different difficulties with certain gens.. Thinking about a '15 with about 80,000 miles.

Gen 1 ED was never released in North America.
Gen 2 ED is in the 4th gen ram (2014-ish to 2019)
Gen 3 ED is in the 5th gen ram (2020+)

Personally I would not purchase a Gen 2 ED. Many here seem to have good luck with them but others are spending 5000+ on repairs, and/or having problems with bearings in the bottom end.

Gen 3 seems to have cleared up these issues, at least they don't appear to be having them but it's a little early to tell as well.

The Gen 1 engine was the prototype that was potentially intended for Cadillacs overseas. After GM's bankruptcy around 2009, Fiat bought 50% of VM Motori

DS body trucks, even Classic versions use the Gen 2. There is no Gen 3 engines being used as warranty for the DS trucks either.

I have decided to stay away from Gen.2 EDs.' I'll just wait until I can find, and afford a Gen.3 ED. Thanks for the input.

I'm sitting around 1500 a month for gas right now and the Eco diesels are better mpg so if I can save a few hundred a month on fuel I think the extra maintenance and repair cost may be worth it.

I can vouch for the 2nd generation, I have 142k and I have had nothing but issues, mostly with the exhaust but unless you plan to buy one to do a EGR delete and some mods I would stay away from them.

Once an engine light comes on if you don't get that taken care of it won't regen and pretty much will make the truck useless.
