hello all,

I have an engine noise that i can't figure out if its my OCD or what. I can hear it in the cab when its quiet and only over 2k RPM. Can rally hear it when standing ion front of truck and i start it when its cold.

Sounds like 2 plates of metal rubbing with each other.

I changed Idler and tensioner pullys and the belt. Truck has a 86k km on it

Thoughts?

Mines doing the same thing
It’s the alternator bearings on mine.

Someone mentioned the clutch fan assembly, but i've heard that noise and its nowher as close to that sound. The noise is still happening even with the ventilation turned of, no ac or auto setting is turned on. To test alternator, would i just remove the belt and start the truck and see if it that? or do i risk mesing somethingup?

put a screwdriver or a hose up to the alternator and listen, you should be able to pinpoint

You could pull drive belt back off to see if noise stops.....if it does you know where to start.
Just don't run for over a minute since water pump will not function with belt off.

With the engine off, try a short burst of WD40 behind the alternator pulley (as close to the shaft as possible)
Don't get any on the belt or pulley surface.
Start it up and see if the noise changes. If it does the bearing is the culprit.

Funny thing. Last night I replaced my Dayco belt with a Continental belt and guess what, the noise is suddenly gone.

Thought you said it was the alternator bearings.....LoL
Yeah those Continental belts designed to help with a slight misalignment.

well i still have an alternator issue, i have lots of electronic noise now on the radio and my dash display sort of strobes with the current.
I think the belt just quieted the noise.

Update on the noise. I had to take my truck in to fix the air suspension. I mentioned the engine noise at cold start up. They called me back and told me my lifters and quit possibly the cam shaft will need to be replaced. The squeaky noise is the AC compressor clutch.

Searching the net has shown me that the 5.7 are notorious for bad lifters. Apparently it has something to do with not enough oil pressure when the truck is idling. thank god its still under warranty. Engine had old 88000km on it. No miss fire codes yet as i picked it up early enough. parts on on BO.

Anyone have a lead on the bearings required for a 2016 Ram 1500 Lone Star w/ 5.7 for the alternator? Confirmed this was my problem but can't seem to find a clear answer on which one are required. Trying to avoid pulling the alternator before ordering the parts.

Apologize if the info is posted somewhere else already.

I would assume just the bearings themselves are pretty cheap so I would replace both at the same time. Maybe Benny at AllMoparParts has what you’re looking for.
