I know that this is the Ram Forum, and that there is a V6 subforum...however, this is where I hang out, and I have total confidence in the oil gurus that also hang out on here. So, to my question: I am seriously considering purchasing a 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland that comes with the 3.6l Pentastar V6. The recommended oil is 0w-20, which I don't think much of. A while back the recommended oil for the Pentastar V6 was 5w-30, which I like the idea of a lot more, and I doubt that the engine has changed much, if any. I will be doing my own oil changes, and will use a synthetic oil filter such as a Fram Endurance or something similar, and more than likely Mobil1 5w-30. We know that the 0w-20 oil is recommended for CAFE, NOT engine longevity. Other than a potential warranty issue, can anyone see a reason not to use 5w-30 in the Pentastar V6? I keep my vehicles for a very long time.

The next oil change in my Wife's 2020 Grand Cherokee is going to be 0w30. The only thing i could find that was changed in 2016 that oil viscosity could affect is the addition of 2 stage Variable Valve Lift. But if it's anything like the MDS system in the Hemi, not using a 20wt oil will not make the engine explode.

Other than that I don't see why a 0w/5w30 oil wouldn't work perfectly fine in the modern 3.6.

I run the HPL 0w30 in my new 24 Ram Warlock classic hemi and my 22 3.6l jeep wrangler. It's a solid oil.

I use it cause I live in Montana and it's fairly cold 6 months of the year with Temps from 40 to -40 randomly.

I have not had any issues. In fact the 24 Warlock classic owners manual says it's ok.

Exactly like mid Minnesota.

I wouldn't have a concern with switching to 5w-30 (I did that on our 2020 1500 Limited) but I might have a concern whether switching to 5w-30 will affect warranty coverage if you have any issues while still under warranty.

IMG_4616.jpegIMG_4614.jpegI read your post and nowhere was the mileage and oil change history I have 4s 6s and 8s each one with different requirements, but if I’m gonna change anything I take miles temp and oil pressure drop into account. For example I switched to 0-40 from 5-40 and since I have close to 40k on the hemi I run 5-30 summer 0-30 winter.I do use 2 different additives along with the 3 k changes.

For any new vehicle that I buy the the first oil and filter change is at 1K miles, then at 5K miles, then every 5K miles there after, always with Mobil1 and a quality oil filter. Other than the 5.7 Hemi, that gets 5w30 Redline along with a Royal Purple 20-820 oil filter once a year, at 2K-3K miles. On our 2012 Jeep Compass that we bought new, it got the recommended 5w20 until 160K miles, then got 5w30...should have changed to 5w30 much sooner. The Compass now has 188K miles on it, runs like new, and has been as dependable as a pet rock. Our 2002 Chevy Cavalier with the 2.2 Ecotec had 300K+ miles on it when we sold it, ran like a top, and is still on the road with the original engine with who knows how many miles on it. I used the above mentioned schedule on the Cavalier with Mobil1 5w30 since new. I already have two 5 qt. jugs of Mobil1 5w30 and two Fram Endurance oil filters for the first two oil changes on the Overland. I know that this schedule works for me, and will stick with it on the 2025 Overland, probably the last new vehicle that I ever buy. Oh, and the first thing that I add to any new vehicle is a K&N Lifetime air filter, the Overland only has 108 miles on it, at a week old and already has a K&N 33-5123 air filter in it.

The only argument I’ve concurred with was a statement they the thinner oil get to the parts that need lubrication faster. On the fence!

Have you read the Owner's manual? There is a place which tells you all about required motor oil(s) for your vehicle. In many cases, the stated requirement is 0W or 5W20... with provision for 0W 0r 5W30 oil in different climes, such as down here in Houston, by God!, Texas. We are currently in a freeze with a Tuesday low of 19 degrees forecast. In MY vehicles, 5W20 is used in winter. My OWNER's Manual says it's okey-dokey to run 5W30 in our Tropical hot as Haydes summers.

We are a nice -30C this morning, for some strange reason, yesterday way north had freezing rain, what the hell, we get it all, all the semi's are parked in the ditches.
I just use what ever the book says.
0-20 or 30 to me is a cold winter oil, I used it in my winter tractors.

I run 0W30 HPL SC with a RP 20-820 in the winter, and RL HP 5W30 with the same filter in the summer.

Fantastic oils, both of them, and with a top tier synthetic media oil filter you will net the very best combo of engine protection with excellent long wear characteristics you could ever hope for.

Do oil sample reports with TAN & TBN and you will see the results.

I think you need to put on the Rose Coloured glasses when you're buying oil,the ones that only see 5W-30 Mike, lol
I did that a couple years ago Rick! I mean, for some reason my local NAPA can't ever get any 0w-20 in stock.

I could be wrong, but I'm thinkin' -30C equals +70F... right?? ;-)
