I've owned a 2009 Ram 2500/diesel truck for about 4-1/2 years now. I'm told I'm the third owner. The truck had about 156,000 miles on it when I got it. It now has 206,000 miles on it. The truck is a fantastic truck. It's a Quad Cab SXT 4D 8'bed 4x4 truck.

The problem I've had since the beginning is several check engine codes. Primarily P2002, U0141, and P0472. I think the latest mechanic solved the P0472 code by replacing a exhaust sensor that tracks the exhaust temperature. He recently replaced the other two so all three exhaust sensors have been replaced. Previous shops have replaced the front top Differential Pressure Sensor twice over three years or so. (Looks like OEM DPF pressure Sensor #51492299AA.)

Right now codes P2002 still is coming up. I also see shortly after that the U0141 code.

Has anyone else seen this P2002 code and had a similar experience? The newest mechanic did access his data source for this code information and has a list of potential causes and confirmed fixes so we will work on that. I don't know if anyone has ever checked the ODBC firmware version but that is one of the suggestions so we will work on that.

To be clear, these two codes (P2002 and U0141) come on again and again as I drive the truck. I get no noticeable degradation in performance when they are on or left on. Sometimes the codes come back on in a few days or 100 miles of driving after I cleared the codes. Sometimes I might get nearly 1000 miles before the light comes on. It does seem to make a difference on how hard I'm driving the truck (long trips) verses lots of short trips, which makes sense for the P2002 code.

I also have been told early on that I could probably just leave this alone and the truck will be fine. I've mostly been doing that. Get a check engine light. I check the codes. If they are the "normal" codes, I clear the codes. Then drive till the check engine light comes on.

I don't want to keep spending money to "fix" things when the same problem(s) continue to persist. It would be nice to be able to drive the truck and not see and hear the alert of the check engine system, and have peace of mind that the truck is working the way it was designed.

By the way, the truck engine is stock. No changes to anything related to the engine or transmission. In fact, it's completely stock except for air bags for towing.

Thanks!

Interesting. The U0141 is a com code. Lost com with the instrument cluster. Which could be a connection issue, or as bad as a bad cluster.

Yeah. Do you think it's related to the P2002 code at all? I didn't think so but these two codes often occur at the same time or within a day or two of each other.

I doubt it. the 2002 is related to an emissions fault.

Ok, It's been frustrating because I've now had it into three shops and no one can seem to resolve the P2002 problem. I am tired of resetting the codes, sometimes more than once a week. I tend to drive shorter distances now and the P2002 code comes up way more now than if I drive really long trips. Any help from the forum group would be appreciated.

What do you know about the code? Any parts been replaced? Any troubleshooting done?

20 second Google comes up with:

U2002 indicates that there is an issue with the parking brake switch sending a stuck signal back to the ABS module

U0141 indicates Lost Communication With Body Control Module "A"

I have a P2002 code, not a U2002 code. That is the one I'm most interested in. Thanks.

IT's a P2002, not a U2002.

A P2002 code indicates that the diesel particulate filter (DPF) efficiency is below the threshold.

One thing that you might try:

  • Run the engine
In a safe setting, bring the engine to 1,400 RPMs for up to 20 minutes. This should create enough heat to burn off any soot that's clogging the filter.

https://www.obd-codes.com/p2002 ............ this is a good reference site

  • The DPF - diesel particulate filter - is in the shape of a catalytic converter and positioned in the exhaust system. Inside is a matrix of compounds coating the passages such as cordierite, silicon carbide and metal fibers. It's 98% effective at eliminating soot.

My bad, the P2002 is the diesel particulate filter problem code.

But the point is, just use google or the site @GTyankee stated to find out what the code means in far less time than it takes to type out a response to a post on here.

A great find. Thank you for the information. I've never had the truck in limp mode (a symptom). I've never noticed any fuel economy reduction (a symptom). (Who would notice a difference between 13.5 and 11 or 12MPG unless the reduction is significantly more than a few MPG. I average probably 13-14MPG.

On the comment about running the engine at 1400 rpm for 20 minutes, can this be done in the driveway or would you want/need air into the radiator? Or maybe the truck needs to be moving due to the computer checking other things as well?

I often (every few weeks) drive 50-55 miles at speeds of 60-70 MPH in one shot. RPMs are higher than 1400 of course. The problem does persist as it's been this way pretty much since I owned the truck (5 years). I'm the third owner.

Thank you for all the helpful suggestions.

I will focus on the Potential Causes that are referenced in the one link you provided. Thanks!

p2002 code comes up as Diagnostic fault code P2002 indicates that your vehicle’s Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is not operating at peak efficiency. This typically results in increased vehicle emissions, as well as decreased performance. and The U0141 code indicates that there is a communication problem between the vehicle's engine control module (ECM) and the instrument panel module (IPM) so take it for what it is worth

I wondered if whatever is causing the U0141 Lack of Communications code, is causing an incorrect DFP fault

Just a thought

About 1/3 of the time, I get both the U0141 and the P2002 alerts. But 2/3 of the time, when I get the CEL, the P2002 is alarming but the U0141 is not.
