Hi I am new here thank you for allowing me to join. I have a 2018 ram 2500 with 6.7 Cummins and 3.42 rear end. I am looking at a 15,000 GVW 5th wheel and the truck is 10,000 GVW, the 5th wheel will put the combo at 25,000 GCVW, where the truck is rated at 24,000 GCVW. Has anyone here any experience with pulling more than the GCVW rating with your truck?
I have gone over GCVW by 2,000 hauling my neighbor's 5th wheel to Florida from Michigan, moved stuff around inside so my rear truck axle was <7000 (it hit the scale at 6970#) My 2018 Ram 2500 6.7 4x4 did it well. I had my hand on ALL the brakes and bearings, new tires on the trailer and a great set of Michelin E rated (10 ply). The truck will do it but it is not recommended.

Crossed the CAt scale in Beaumont Tx at 39,000 gross and my bud was at 41,000. Hauling oilfield directional tools from Tilden Tx to Lafayette La. Truck pulled great. Was it legal? No. Did it pay well? Yes it did.
That’s was in 3500.

Ram factory data is confusing. 16,400 maximum trailer weight, 24,300 GCVW, 10,000 pounds GVW. Rear axle is 6500 max, payload is 2300 max IIRC, I guess you can pull a 16000 pound trailer but the tongue weight can’t be over 2000 or so. Confusing to say the least.

Yep. The 16,400lb trailer towing is a marketing ploy. No way to get to maximum tow capacities without exceeding some other capacity in 99% of cases

Thanks for posting that website. A real eye-opener, and makes you really think of the potential grave consequences of bad judgement. (I'm just going up the highway a few miles).

I'm not saying this would happen to you. As I don't know the circumstances that led up to this outcome, but I am a big fan of having more truck than I need, not just enough truck, or barely enough truck

You do realize that 2500s & 3500s use the same brakes, doubt he is exceeding the brake capacity.
The OP may want to check with the state he lives in, plating the truck with a higher GVWR(yes this is possible in many states).
In NC, plating the truck for more than the truck rating does not change the GCVWR, GVWR or the payload of the truck. It merely pays the taxes on the weights specified. Everything else still applies. The fines for exceeding plated weights is usually more than the fines for being overloaded.
