Actually my 6.7 cruises at about 1400 RPM and revs to 1800 or so to climb a hill. To me there is a subjective difference between the 6.7 Cummins putting out 800 ft/lb of torque at 1700 RPM (58% of max) and a Hemi putting out 429 ft/lb of torque at 4000 RPM (67% of max). It is torque that accelerates the load not RPM and in that department the 6.7 wins hands down.

No doubt the diesel has more power. We're also comparing apples and oranges here due to transmission gear count + rear end differences. None of that was my point.

My point was, who cares when a Hemi tows between 2000 and 3000 rpms for 95+% of the trip? My truck does that, it has loads of RPM left so it's not a problem. So lets not compare a hemi at 2300 rpms and unconsciously think its working harder than a diesel at 1500 rpms just because its revving higher.

I did say subjective which means just that, it is subject to my perception. When accelerating to get on the highway or passing, it would seem 1700 RPM's is less than 4000 RPM's. I found the mechanical sound of all those parts moving that fast in a Hemi to be objectionable.

And that's fine; many of us find the sound and smell of a clattering diesel to be objectional and love the sound of a big v8 getting after it. All I was saying was: be careful when comparing RPMs and relating that to "working harder" because the range on the gas is so much higher. The diesel is working near the top of its RPM range quite often as well.
