I have a 2017 ram 1500 tradesman 5.7L and
believe the exhaust size is 3” from the cat back.

I’m wanting to upgrade to a dual exhaust flowmaster, but most of the kits for my truck with out factory dual exhaust, seem to pipe down to 2.5”.

Now, I’m not an exhaust specialist, but wouldn’t this hurt performance by bottlenecking 3” to 2.5” pipe size?

Suggestions?

Not really noticeable you have to take into account factory has cats, muffler and resonators in there all of which impede flow. Delete the resonators and put in a high flow muffler there are no worries going from 3 - 2.5. The dual exhaust rams go from 3 - 2¼.

No a dual 2.5 flows more than 3 single.

2(π·1.25^2) = 9.82 square inches cross section which is greater than π·1.5^2 = 7.07 square inches cross section. If you want the math to be super hard :)
Dude, baby steps.

OEM dual exit is 2.25 pipe and still outflows a single 3” FWIW.

Funny thing is Ram advertises the same hp and torque numbers whether you got the single or dual exit

That's because cat backs dont really make power lol. Ur only as good as the weakest link and manifolds are your weakest link.

Curious if the massive 3 foot chambered muffler is exactly the same between the 2, just a dual 2.25” exit vs single offset 3”.

Chambered mufflers definitely rob top end horsepower. You won’t notice it with the factory PCM choked tuning though.
