So I dropped of my truck this morning before work to finally get my 18" Magnaflow installed. Got there just before closing to pick it up after work, paid and got my keys. As I was walking out he said "I think you are going to be really impressed when you drive it". So I crank it up and immediately I can hear the difference. I get in and give it the gas and am thinking to myself, man this thing is louder than I was expecting... I get home and measure... 14"!!! WTF!!!

Now I am torn... It sounds great driving around BUT, how loud is it going to be pulling the camper with the wife & kids???

One thing for sure--it ain't going to get any quieter. I'd have them do it again, the right way this time.

I agree with the above posts...take it back and have them redo it to your liking. But, on the bright side, at least the shop knew what the most popular muffler is for these trucks...lol

Thanks for the replies!!! This is my main concern. I have to leave a 0dark:30 tomorrow morning for work and won't be back until Friday. I will be calling him first thing once they open.

dude thats sucks. but first id put the motor under load and hear it before i bring it back. imo there isnt much diffrence between the 18 and 14. its still gonna drone at the 2k rpm range and at full lock up.

Test it out. Maybe get on the highway and put it in tow/haul mode to raise the rpm and see how it sounds. Then if anything you could put sound deadener in the truck. That way it wont be as bad, and on the plus side to that you get less road noise and your radio will sound better. Just a thought.

My buddies 96 ram is just as loud as mine but has sound deadener in it and you can barely hear the exhaust with the windows up.

Yea man! We just put the spray in sound deadener in my buddies ford not too long ago. Only put it in the door and just doing that helped. Also helped with the sound of closong the door. Id go that route if it were me. Just know if you plan on doing that it can get a little complicated due to have to remove the seats and carpet. If you do it yourself.

Maybe pm some one on the forum who has an 18" and see how much drone that has with their truck.

I think its a message from the Ram Gods. I think it was their plan the whole time.

Call them and see what they will do for you. Any reputable shop will make it right.

You have to admit it sounds good.

I put my Leer 800 hard cover on after I put the Magnaflow(18") on and it helped with the sound a little bit, but you could still hear it. I think you going to get a little drone with either one of the Mangnaflows--just a little louder with the smaller one--like someone said it usually happens around 2k rpm---just in your crusing range.

The thing is pulling the camper is gonna echo it. Same thing happened when I pulled the enclosed race trailer with my truck.

If you have an invoice showing you wanted the 18" muffler it should be NO question.
I'd change it if it were me; I had my resonator changed to the longest one they could fit shortly after install (my bad) in order to quiet it down, and it did exactly what I wanted. And you STILL hear it just fine when you get on it.

The drone will get old after a while. Like others have said that the magnaflow mufflers do get louder over time. Had a custom exhaust on my xterra and had to go to a 24" muffler from two glass packs and even with the 24" after 2 months the drone was noticeable though nothing like the glass packs. If you do any highway driving it'll be there all the time. I have been going back and forth about doing a mufflex 24 but I do enjoy the quiet ride with the stock sound after 3 years of listening to muffler drone. To each they're own.

these 4th gens do not drone like 3rd gens did. Regular highway driving with the 14 won't be bad at all. Where he will have a problem with the 14 or 18 is under load pulling a trailer and having it echo off the trailer like Kenny said

I find with the 18" that I am manually downshifting it a lot to get rid of the drone. Mainly in hilly back road driving. It only drones loudly at highway speeds when it bogs down up a hill or under a slight load before it downshifts. Keep thinking I might go back to stock, but then the kid in me hears that hemi roar and I'm all smiles.

Most of you guys have the rear exit exhaust though right? I have a side exit, and am hoping that I won't get any extra drone from a trailer since I am not pointing sound waves right at it lol.

Thanks everyone for the replies!!! Well after putting about 220 miles on it this morning, a mostly highway and some around town, it is not nearly as loud as it seemed yesterday when I first picked it up. In fact, i was able to cary on a normal conversation with my passanger for most of the 3 hour ride to Charlotte.

I did have to cut the MDS off when crusing around town since it made it a lot louder. But at no point was it unbareable. I can see why the 14 is so popular.

I see that this is going ot be a tough decission.
