My dad can tell the difference between a '38 and a '39 Ford, a '68 & '69 Camaro, and a boatload of other vehicles. I know the tailgates are different between '70 & '71 and 2000 & 2001 Dodge pickups just because I've owned one or the other.

But are there any exterior differences in the 4th Gen model years? It's tough enough with the different headlights and grills that came out in the same year, and the '02 HD's look like my 2001, and the 2019 Classics look like my 2018. Shoot, I couldn't even tell if I was behind a Ram or Chevy coming back from lunch an hour ago because it didn't have a tailgate or tow mirrors.

If you can't tell, it doesn't take much to confuse me.

for the most part there are not many differences. Generally but not always a 09 through 12 will look the same along trim levels. Same for 13 though 16 and most 17's. In late year 17 they started changing the front grill and tail gate on some trims (ie. laramie, limited)

In 2013, the front grill changed a bit. The bottom corners are beveled instead of 90 degrees.

oh yea i grouped the years (09-12 & 13 and up), but didn't say that in 2013 there was a small refresh that changed the grill and front bumper which also orientated the fog lights vertical.

Another visual change that started in 2013 was led tail lights and projector headlights on the higher trim levels. However you can get harnesses to make them work on older trucks or the lower trim level trucks so at this point if you see led tail lights or projectors it doesn't guarantee you are seeing a 13 and up higher trim level truck

Thanks for those responses. OK, bottom grill corners/bumper and fog lights. Was this only on the half tons because my HD grill isn't beveled and my fog lights are horizontal? For example, here's a pic I found on Google of a 2018. Sure could have used that $10k off on mine, but it is 18 months later.

The led tails on a sport are tinted, and they have black projector headlights while Laramie have bright red tails and chrome projectors.

Sports are mono chromatic ( all one colour ) Laramie have chrome grill surrounds and bumpers.

Express trims look like older sports with no projector/ led lights and have the older sport wheels but have vertical fogs

Outdoorsman have fender flares, single exhaust body colour bumpers

SLT have chrome bumpers and single exhaust black mirrors

Outdoorsman can have chrome bumpers or body color bumpers.
