I have a 2012 1500 and which I believe to be stock side steps, because I've seen them on other trucks as well. Well they are flaking really bad, and just looks terrible. Plus I hate chrome. Has anyone had this sort of issue? I've had trucks stock with and without them, I've had major lifted trucks with and without them. I'd like to keep them, but I'm unsure what to do to them. I was thinking of major sanding and paint them black, or I have a good amount of my paint left from my front bumper I could paint them color match.
I am more than likely going to trade it in eventually for a 2500 Hemi, but until then I'd like to make it presentable.

What do you guys think? Also here is a picture of a similar truck without them and also with the black handles, which I want because the chrome is flaking and has nail scratches inside and drives me crazy

If those are the stock aluminum units, you could strip/sand them down to the metal and get them powdercoated. That would hold up better than paint.

Or, get one of those bed liner roll on kits and cover them with that material.
