I just bought a set of fender flares that were taken off a longhorn. My question is what's the best tape to use to put these on my truck?

I bought a set of new take off flares for mine in 2012 and the tape was jacked up on one of them. I replaced it with 3M tape and installed the others with the tape that was still on the flares. Well, it's 2017 and the only one that has ever come loose is the one that I replaced the tape on.

I agree. I just put the oem fender flares on my truck. Mine were used. Removing the old 3m tape was a *****. Took 40+ minutes for each flare.

Anyways, you have to apply the new tape in WARM/HOT weather!!! I installed mine in 30° weather and the tape keeps coming off of the paint. I'm going to have to redo mine in the spring once it's warmer out but with the cold air the 3m tape won't stick and bond to the trucks paint. Major bummer.

3m also makes an adhesion promoter wipe (I believe its 3M 06396). wipe that on the plastic before applying the 2 sided tape and it will stick like you wouldnt believe. get the tape lined up first try though, there wont be a 2nd try.

I have attached three sets of flares using 3m 06386 acrylic trim tape. As others have mentioned, clean off the body with alcohol or cleaner so the tape sticks. When I did mine, I left the backing tape on except for one end- let that end hang out, screw the flare in using the screws. Once it's on hand tight, then pull the tape backing off from the end you left hanging out.

That's exactly how I did mine, minus the alcohol wipes. That's probably what screwed me. Not sure if i used the "3M 06386" tape but I used the 3M that came in a roll sized 1/2" X 15 feet. It has red tape on it that you peel when your ready to stick the flares to the truck.

My plan is to wait until it's in the 70s. Clay bar the whole truck. Wipe down the fender flare area with alcohol. Then apply the flares. May take away is it's like paint, it's all in the prep.

Yep, you need to clean it good to get oil, grease, grime etc all off. The 3m tape I use is 1/4" wide, fits very well in the small channel in the flare.

Stripping the old tape off the used flares, I used a very sharp 3/8" wood chisel- get underneath it and 90%+ of it comes off. I didn't worry about the sticky residue left behind, it doesn't seem to be a problem.

do you apply the adhesion promoter to both the plastic flare and the paint?

No need to apply the adhesion pro over to the paint,. It's not designed really for that anyway. Good clean paint free of wax and grease is all the 3m tape needs to adhere well. The adhesion promoter wipes are mainly to get good adhesion with the plastic. Mold release agents in the plastic are the main enemy of a good bond

Lucky. I spent 10 years painting cars and I can't tell ya how many hours of my life have been waisted trying to carefully eraser wheel off sticky goo while making a giant mess or trying g to Razer blade it off and inevitably slicing the crap out of myself
