dont try to remove the spring.
if you have ever broken a tape measure and watched what the tape dose the spring will more than likely act the same thing
i would look for another style or have a set of custom hinges made and use a hood prop or get some gas struts
Yeah I was looking at the extra set I have and I don't want to loose a hand. I have been looking for a hood strut kit, so the brackets will mount to my hood and fenders. Like a hard shell toneau
the only way to remove the spring safely would be to take a large c-clamp or two and add some feet that would wrap around the edges of the spring so it cant slide off and then tighten the c-clamps so that the spring is slightly more compressed then cut the stud off
i would also suggest straping the spring so the center cant move either side to side so it dose not unwind for the center out
when all said and done dig a hole in the woods and burry the whole thing c-clamps and all so in 10 years when it resurfaces the spring is all rotted and not a death trap any more
not bad be real careful sizing gas struts they can be dangerous
some guy in the shop found out not to long ago that before you add 100+ lbs of push buttons lights and wire to a console lid that it comes up real fast caught him right in the chin and split it right open and he chipped a tooth
