I have a hunch that with the new longer 'OEM' OCI's we see in the late-model 4th Gen RAMS that a filter change was required,,,
Not so much because the electric steering unit wont allow an earlier model 4th Gen filter to fit. (They do fit with plenty of room to spare,,,,)
So Why?
Because everything is built to a spec. The same company (Champion) that makes Royal Burla filters makes Mopar filters, 'Champ' filters, and several other 'labels',,, All built to whatever spec is required)
My guess is the 'real' change with the new MOPAR short filters is with the media needed to achieve the longevity and dirt holding capacity to match the longer OCI's,,,
Which,,, would also mean,,, don't run a 'value orientated' 'pre- 10k max OCI' 4th Gen filter on your '10K max OCI truck. (Example: Don't use the same PH2 that you once used for 5k miles on your 09 on your 14 and expect it to last 8-10 k miles. The 'guts' of that PH2 are most likely not gonna meet the specs of a PH10060, even though the 10060 is smaller,,,)
Filters made specifically to run for longer OCI's are most likely safe to run, but don't assume just because it's bigger, it automagically better.
(Royal Burla,,,, Rolls off the tongue real nice,,, I think I like that name better!!!!! LOL!)
