My 14 hit 2700 miles today, and I'm going on vacation next week and almost certainly will cross 3k along the way. This of course being on the original oil, so i decided to change it today. Unfortunately that meant I needed oil and filter that I could pick up TODAY, and while most places have RP oil, nobody carries their filters.

Luckily my local speed shop stocks both amsoil ss 5w20 and the amsoil filter for my truck, so I went and picked it all up. 7 quarts and a filter came to $102. Lot of money for oil and filter, but I'm figuring I should get easily 10k or 1 full year before I need to change it again, which equates to about a penny per mile to have a top tier oil and filter in the hemi.

First, whoever designed the location of the oil filter has one effed up sense of humor. Tried a rag over the components below it, tried the plastic bag, which promptly melted through but that created a nice little chute for a bit. I had no trouble getting the filter off using a cap wrench and a ratchet, but a strap wrench probably wouldn't fit.

Second, when you crack the drain plug, be prepared for the oil to rocket out of the pan like a heat seeking missile. Got a nice oil spot on my driveway thanks to that. Also, pro tip, don't drop the drain plug into your drainage pan. It's a MF to get back out.

Now, onto the new stuff. The amsoil filter is high quality stuff. While it was a few dollars more than the RP filter u was originally looking at, I figured since they had it, it was worth it to get it.

Got the filter on and the oil filled up, held back about a third of a quart just in case because it's always easier to add than subtract. Started the truck and ran it a bit, checked again and it needed the rest of that 7th quart after all.

I will say this, the truck has only run for about a minute or so with the new oil, but it definitely is noticeably quieter in terms of valvetrain noise. My truck was never all that bad to begin with, but I definitely hear a difference. Won't be getting it out on the road until later but when I do I'll comment on anything I notice with the engine under load.

No joke about the oil filter. The worst place I've ever change one. What a mess! I have to figure out a cleaner way to change it.

due to my disabilities I can no longer do something as simple as even an oil change but I too had it swapped out at the 550 mile mark this afternoon (Sat). Much happier to have the good stuff flowing through the veins now.

I just hate how the filter is way back and up there.

I need to try the foil thing, I'm just not sure I'm going to hold the foil, lossen the filter and avoid oil coming down once the filter comes off..lol

Makes me wish I had one of those underground oil bays..

This is the first vehicle I can actually see being worth it to install a filter relocation kit.

Get a empty 2 liter bottle (coke, pepsi etc.) and cut it in half. Use the bottom half to let the oil run into as you loosen the filter (pre loosen the filter so it can be removed the rest of the way by hand). The bottle will get hot if the oil is still hot but it won't melt. Might need a rag to hold bottle due to the heat. Then I let the filter slide off right into the bottom half of the bottle and slowly bring it down.

You haven't changed the oil on too many vehicles then... Chevy Aveo's have a tiny oil filter conviently located above the catalytic converter, so you are guaranteed to burn your entire arm changing it.

A lot of 4 bangers are like that. My wifes old Sentra had the filter above the the exhaust down pipe and little to the right. After you get your rubber arm around the axle you would be lucky not to get burned..lol

My moms old PT Cruiser and Dads Trans Am were the easiest to change. Filter sits right next to the pan.

The Aveo is pretty bad, but I believe the award for most @&$?'ed up design goes to the 95+ Cavalier 2.2L. I think it's probably easier to just pull the whole damn engine then to get a hand on the filter. I'd rather change the rear-most spark plugs on an LS1 Camaro then to change the oil on a Cavalier (and God bless you if you've ever successfully completed either of those miraculous feats).

For me it is a tie, if you know how to get to the filter it isn't that bad. You have to reach in around the control arm on the passenger side. If it is a early model with no controller on the top of the engine you can reach in through the top though.
No matter what though it will still make a huge mess...

I've noticed that these trucks really like fresh oil for some reason. After my oil changes the truck always seems to run a bit smoother and gets slightly better mpg's....

the Ram is my 12th vehicle since i started driving. Have done oil changes on all of them, ranging from mustangs to lexus to mercedes and land rover, Nissan and everything in between. Even my 98 cobra with that motor shoe horned into that body was not nearly as annoying as the ram.

If only you knew how ignorant your statement is. I've spent 7 yrs in the Army as a helicopter mechanic changing oil filters in counties you have never heard of, 3 yrs in the Air Force as a C-130 mechanic changing oil filters in countries you would **** your pants in, and been changing my cars/trucks oil filters since I was 16 (I'm 39 now). But since you're making statements on someone you've never met, I will do the same.

Since you're talking about changing oil filters on a Chevy Aveo, I bet I've easily changed more oil filters than you have been laid. :flipthebird: :roflsquared:

BTW, just let the car cool down before you change that oil filter on the Aveo and you won't get your arm burned....problem fixed. :favorites13:

I had a 1992 Z28 I bought while stationed in Germany. It was easier to just raise the entire car on a lift to change the back spark plugs.

Id have to say the worst one that I've ever changed is on the 3.0 Ford Tauras. The only reason I say this is because the first time you do one and you don't realize how you are turning the filter you will have the serial numbers burnt into your forarm. But on the bright side only had to do it once to learn never to do that again lol.

That was my thought, why are you guys changing oil when the motor is so darn hot? I change mine first thing in the morning, all the oil has drained into the pan and the plastic bag trick over the steering works well, no melting...

Thanks for your service Sir John - ATW
