Hello, I'm in the market for a tow vehicle, looking at crew cabs with the 6.4L I came across a 2016 big horn with 88k miles for$28,500. I really don't want high mileage but anything below 40k is a little more then I want to spend. I'll spend the extra if I have to and get a newer one but was curious what you guys think about buying something with over 88k on it.

TIA

Hi and welcome. Almost 30k for 4 years old and 90k miles seems high to me. If your ok with less features I got a 4x4 6.4 tradesman brand new for 36k. You should be able to find something similar I would think with a little lookingIMG_20200815_134133978_HDR.jpg

Not the best time to buy used, my 2018 2500 CC 4x4 8' bed is worth about $4k more than I paid new for it last year. It is the Tradesman but has many of the packages available and is exactly what I wanted. I have added missing items for thousands less than what upgrading to higher trim package.

I recommend looking on Rams inventory search site and searching out the trucks that appeal to you, then go to the dealer websites because they generally list therefore less, and then negotiate. I never saw my truck nor stepped on the lot until the day I picked it up, did everything via email and phone calls. And one thing, when they show you savings off MSRP, they always want to add the destination back into the total price. However, make sure to catch that MSRP includes destination so their savings is off the MSRP including destination. You should never allow them to add that charge back in. I also avoided the dealer prep charge, I brought my own temporary tags and my own insurance and took care of the financing. Good luck

I didn't want high miles either, so last year I bought a 2010 2500 5.7l with only 175k miles on it.

Seriously though, I don't think 88k is high miles. There is always a chance something will go wrong, and you have to think about new shocks and things like that. But usually if it has that many miles, it is past the point of being a lemon and the money saved on the purchase can make up for a lot of repairs, especially if you are handy and can do a lot of the work yourself. I would change all the fluids, new pads, shocks, sparkplugs with almost any used vehicle I get within the first year anyway, regardless of mileage. If I found a clean 88k mile rig at a great price, I would jump on it.

Great thank you, part of the problem is I like all the fancy stuff on the laramie, I'm trying to find a good deal on a big horn with most of the options then have seats reupholstered with leather. I do agree with the higher miles having the bugs worked out. I actually think now is a good time to buy though with so many people out of work these things aren't exactly flying of the lot. I do most of my own maintenance so replacing fluids, shocks and basic stuff like that would not be a problem. Right now the 2019 big horns with low mileage are going for mid 40's, if I can get one of those for around $38-$39k I'll snag it, but buying an older rig with some higher mileage for cheap would leave more room for upgrades. Thanks again.

I guess it depends how long you plan on keeping it. If you want to push it 300K plus than 88k doesn't seem too bad but if you want to turn it over at 200K might not be worth it. I think the 16 was a pretty good model year and any major issues would have probably shown up by now. I agree you can mod up your truck for a lot less in most cases than buying higher trim level even in a used vehicle. If it's a good fit for YOU it's probably worth doing.

General consensus seems to be price is high so thanks for that, I don't plan on paying what their asking obviously, but I appreciate the input. KBB price from private pay is around $27,900, FWIW.

Download the CarGurus app and look around. That price honestly doesn't look that far out of line based on current pricing these days. You could look at a Tradesman to bring the price down more to your liking. But you'd end up spending more time and money bringing the interior up to what you really want.

Don't be afraid to drive and get what you want. I personally drove 11 hours.

I found this truck with a quick search just now.

I think that is a lot of miles for a 2016 and personally think they are asking too much. But, when we sell ours don't we generally want as much as we can get out of it? I wouldn't really mind the amount of miles, but would negotiate that price - or as others have mentioned - look for a '19 model hold-over if possible.

Still looking. I've had 4 trucks sold out from under me while I'm on the way to the dealer, beginning to think it's a bait and switch scam. Looked at one yesterday that the previous owner welded a 2" sleeve inside the 2.5" hitch socket LOL. [emoji848] I don't even know what to say about that. Another one, 2015 35000 miles on it, all rusted up, oversize tires rubbing like crazy on frame. Obviously been flooded.

If your looking at 2014 and up ensure that the new MOPAR revised drag link is installed before you agree to the sale.

The band aid recall fix is to weld the jamb nuts to the adjustment collar. The redesigned one is a much better. Good luck

Didn't want to start a new thread for this as I'm sure it's an old debate that keeps popping up but I couldn't find any posts so here goes.

Leaf or coil springs?

Found a nice deal on a 2013 and was wondering if the newer trucks with coil springs are better or will I like the old leaf springs?
