I've been taking my truck to the dealership for oil changes, but now i wanna start doing them my self and putting in royal purple. What do I need to get the job done? And I've been noticing my truck has been eating up oil, after the 3,000 miles I check it and its at the line to add more. Is that normal for the hemi?

Are you sure it was filled properly at the dealer oild change? My 04 used a little oil, gradually reducing the loss by lime I hit 50K. Now I go about 5500-6000 mile when I get close to the fill line and I change my Amsoil. I do not fill the oil to the top of the fill line, but some place in the middle.

Yeah when I get it back from the dealer I check the stick and its above the add more line.
I want to switch to synthetic oil now and see if it helps.

I just did my first change on my own. It's not hard if you make sure you get all the right stuff. Get the right weight oil and the right oil filter.

Make sure you buy a way of getting the old filter off, because mine was screwed on so tight, even with a wrench I could barely get the freakin' thing off.

Same with draining the oil. Almost impossible to get that freakin' bolt out.

Then the freakin' oil cap to fill it wouldn't come off and I had to use a wrench to get if off.

The point is, make sure you do your research or it'll be frustrating and you may end up wrestling underneath your truck for an hour the first time.

The upside is you can use the highest quality oil for less than it would be to pay for it changed with lower quality stuff.

I would disagree with stuff being hard to get off. I would suggest making sure the oil filter is nice and dry before trying to get it twisted off. And then just reach up, grab it, and twist it off. You will need an oil filter, which can be be bought at any auto parts store, 7 quarts of oil of your choice, a ratchet to get the oil drain plug off, and a way to catch the oil when it comes out of the drain hole. I have a drain pan, but any large bowl you won't be wanting is fine.

I think the place that changed the oil last tightened everything up way too much and that's why it was so hard. He might get lucky and be able to hand loosen it.

I also bought the wrong filter the first time. So make sure you look up which oil filter your truck takes. (Amazon has a cool feature that will tell you which one in a given product line)

its easy, get some cheap oil pan at autozone or something, only a couple of bucks and prevents a huge mess. make sure you get the right filter and oil like others said. let the truck cool down and loosen the bolt on the pan, let it all flow out then tighten it back up. unscrew the filter, and carefully bring it down because oil will still be in it. then take the new filter and spread a little bit of oil on the o ring on it and tighten it back up, but only hand tighten it, dont use a wrench. then just fill her up.

for some reason my oil cap is also really hard to get off, not sure why...

I never let anyone change my oil because it seems they always wrench the plug or the filter on so tight I can't get it off without a ton of work. I change oil for my 3 vehicles and my families other 5 just because I want them to have it done right. It is a lot of easy work and the way I keep up is by doing synthetic and doing between 6k and 10k if we used regular oil it would be tough to keep up.
I applaud you changing it yourself and you know what you have and that it is done right.

I just did my 08 4.7 yesterday for the first time since I bought it in feb. Very easy to get to the drain plug and the filter. I recommend getting a large oil pan with a gooseneck spout for pouring the oil into a container. Get a big flat oil pan that slides under a car to catch anything that misses the oil pan set up under the drain plug.

When you remove the drain plug, oil will shoot out and get on you, so don't freak out and drop the plug :p I normally pull the plug, take the fill cap off, and go inside and let it drain out for about ten minutes. Then come back and put the plug back in.

My truck has a "catch-channel" under the oil filter when was nice. My truck uses a S2 type oil filter.

Get some latex gloves, shop towels, the pans, a large mouth funnel, and some gojo and you should be set.

What weight oil are you using that it uses that much oil? Being from the Detroit area I have a lot of friends that work for Chrysler, mopar, and msx. In 05 they switched from 5/30 to 5/20 for the hemi. I was told for my 05 to switch to 5/30 at the first oil change and don't look back. Not one person said to stick with the 5/20 unless I was leasing it. I used one quart in the first 3000 miles of the truck with the 5/20 and knock on wood not a drop since then on 5/30 with 65k on it now.
