I towed for the first time yesterday, delivering my 2010 New Holland Boomer 8N to its new owner. The truck did fine, and the Pentastar never felt stressed, although it does like to rev a bit more than my former '15 2500 5.7. This load (I'd estimate ~6K or so) would barely have had the 2500 squatting in the back. But it did what I needed it to do, and my last remaining tractor, a 1950 Ford 8N, weighs about half what the Boomer does, so it should be a breeze.

Just out of curiosity, what speed did you go at, for how long, and what were your rpms like while driving steady?

I actually read the manual before heading out, and it said to keep speed down to 50 for the first 500 miles of towing (independent of the normal 500 mile break-in period). I stayed off interstates, but ended up running around 55 most of the way through rolling TN hills. RPM varied from ~2,000 to 5,000 going up steeper hills (in Tow/Haul mode). The dash monitor indicated I was getting around 13-14 MPG.

When we moved last year, I pulled a 25' enclosed trailer with the 2500/5.7, and was easily at 10K lb. (or more) for some of the loads. The 5.7 would wind out going up hills, too, albeit at about 8-9 MPG average (obviously pulling a much heavier, very wind-resistant load).

Pic is just for comparison to show how the 2500 handled pulling both tractors. Prob had less weight on the tongue since the load was better balanced on the trailer.

I love all old tractors. It doesn't matter what color they are. Love em all. I had '52 VAC Case for 20 years. I switched it over to 12 volts. With 12 volts, the Coils were hotter. The starter was stout enough survive 12 volts if you weren't on it too long. That tractor ALWAYS started. Ran great. Sounded good. But like all oldies, on it's best day, it was still an antique.

Last year I bought a new JD 3038E with the big tires. It has a loader, of course. The new JD is so much more tractor, obviously. How'd I do without a loader all these years?

I remember where and when I saw my first New Holland 8N. What a cool idea!
