So I cracked the transmission filter/pan on a chunk of ice now its got a slow drip. Not sure how many days its gonna last while I wait for the filter...

I'd like to go to the store and just get fluid to pump in their while waiting. Do I have to use the ZF 8 fluid or will any synthetic fluid do?

I have a 2015 with 53,000 miles on it.

I see some people have used amsoil/valvoline but im not sure what the move is here. I can't seem to find any followups from those people.

It’s a very specific type of fluid, and you can get it from the parts department or off Amazon. But I wouldn’t just put any synthetic in there at all, unless you don’t care about your warranty.

There is a a detailed process on how to add fluid including jacking up the rear end of the truck to get the proper level. Not sure if you are aware of this. Personally, I wouldn't use anything except OEM fluid.

What he said....I think the zf fluid is like $20+ per quart and there is no way to check the fluid level without going through a bunch of stuff.....good luck. Chrysler is pretty picky about the fluid in the tranny....

ZF 8 fluid or the Mopar equivalent (mostly just rebranded ZF fluid) if you are still under warranty. I believe the latest Mopar part # is 68218925AA (old part #s I think include 68157995AA, 68157995AB, and 68339073AA).

Sometimes the Mopar stuff is actually cheaper. If you look at BMW, Audi, etc. forums, many times they will recommend buying our Mopar ZF fluid for their ZF transmissions, rather than the more expensive BMW, Audi, etc. branded fluid, because they say its the same.

If you are feeling brave, especially if out of your warranty period, you can try Amsoil's tranny fluid or Ravenol. The Amsoil stuff is supposedly rated for our ZF 8s now, although I haven't read of anyone actually using it for them yet. The Ravenol stuff, made in Germany, is supposedly superior to the ZF fluid, with many good reports. There is a steady Redline following here on the forum as well that may recommend a Redline transmission fluid. I highly recommend you do your research before substituting any of these for the ZF or Mopar stuff.

Also: ATP, I believe, makes a pan/filter kit that you could use rather than the expensive Mopar pan/filter.

I was able to put a ton of epoxy on the crack to stop the leak for now.

Obviously it’s just a bandaid however and won’t last.

So far I acquired the mopar filter/cover for $129 on eBay.

Matter of fluid now.

Redline D6 is a good alternative.

Do you know if this is warranty compliant?

Wow, are things with vehicles getting complicated! I'm sure there was a day my Grandpa was blown away at the concept of an automatic transmission. Now, we're paying $20/quart for fluid to put in the damn thing. $20 is probably what Grandpa paid for his first car!

WIfe and I saw 1969 Camero driving down the road. I looked at her and said I doubt we see any 2019 models in 2039. they simply will not function without all the electronics.
Which probably will not be available anymore.

Hope I'm still around in 2039. By then all vehicles will be electric powered.

For the 8 speed ?

The transmission was originally designed and built by ZF. ZF recommends
80000km to 100000km service, so 49709mi to 62137mi.

Redline says right on their sight D6 is recommended for ZF 6 and 8 Transmissions.

D6 in the 8 speed has also been discussed at length in the synthetic oil thread about 7 months ago.
