Just did this on my 2009 as I have the box out to replace the heater core and evaporator. You can see how dirty the evaporator is after 195,000 miles. I've seen worse. I got a K&N filter and the door off of Amazon. I recommend this update to anyone with one of these trucks as your A/C will suffer from the evaporator getting clogged up. I just used a box cutter with a new blade and it was easy. Of course a little more difficult if you're doing it in the truck but doesn't look too bad.

BTW, I work in the automotive industry and when cabin air filters first came out, the car companies started putting them in lots of vehicles. Then they stopped doing it so much because people would never change them. /then they'd bring their cars in for service for issues with the climate control. I bet most people still don't change them.

Nick,
Yea a lot easier with the box removed lol, But not too bad when it is in the truck ! Did mine I think 2017 and it catches a lot of crap from my Pine Trees with their needles :O

As you know for years we never had them and I never plugged a condenser but with the crap in my CAF filter I was lucky because of where I lived at the time,

I was in the HVAC business for over 45 years and amazing to see how nasty a house Af was after not being changed that year !SO can only imagine how nasty a Coil /Condenser could get

So the ones who say it is not worth it is taking a gamble whether they have problems later on w/o one ! Just my 2 cents /

When the 2016 Rams came out, they did not cut the plastic out for the CAF.
The 2016.5 Rams, already have the cut out & the door, you just need to install the CAF

I bought the WIX Charcoal CAF
I paid more for it, but charcoal absorbs the odors

After you cut the opening, i hope that you are at least trying to remove debris out of the fan cage

Yes, after seeing people saying they used a Dremel it would be hard to get the debris out. Could remove the blower from the bottom. Even using a knife on it with on the bench I ended up with some shavings in there. Easy for me to blow out as I had that half of the box separated to replace the evaporator.

Nicksgarage, howdy neighbor

I pass through Ramona quite often while escorting mostly Mobile Homes going up the hill further into the Julian area.

I stop at the Egg Ranch & the Kountry Kitchen if i get a chance

I had my Ram Billet Badges made up there also

Do you go up the 67 to Ramona? Can't imagine pulling a mobile up the 78. I want to put a MFR home on our property here in town. I haven't been to the Kountry Kitchen since the pandemic. We used to go there for breakfast all the time.

I have a 2016 that was built in 2015. No door... After suffering from cramps contorting my 6' 2" body on the floor pan and having my abdomen compressed by the door sill and only getting a small amount cut I drove to my local mechanic and had it done...

Don't forget to vacuum the box and get the debris left from cutting hole. I have changed mine out and it does get dirty. I noticed that there is a clean area on the filter indicating that not all of the filter surface is used.

I used a wet/dry vacuum to clear the cavity area before putting the filter in. I was reading through all the posts to see if anyone else mentioned it. :favorites13:

A very good idea to remove any crap that may have fallen in

@RedSRT4Me I had planned on doing that too. Blower is sometimes a little noisy.

Yea that is my gripe as well about the noisy blower ! But I just live with it. I do think it is a good mod
FYI if you tie off the gravity string on the glove box it is easier to grab and reinstall

Mine doesn't have it which is weird. It may have been broken. I really don't know.

I have done this twice, once on my 2012, and again on my 2015. I butchered it with the soldering iron both times. Could not get positive "click" seating. It stays in place, but i'm not happy with. Just don't care enough to finesse it and possibly butcher it further.
