Over here in Redneck Alberta there's lots of things that have fell off or been deleted to go along with every 4X4 that's lifted, :Big Laugh:
Absolutely!

Likewise back in the day living in Port Hope & Cobourg in the rural farm country: free air breathing and straight dumps were real things ;)
The RedNeckery of it all was awesome!
I also flipped the air filter lid over to ensure I had maximum ram-air capabilities on my carbed monstrosities :banana-mario:

I miss the sound of an old Q-Jet opening the secondaries with a flipped air cleaner lid, lol.
The younger generation will never have the pleasures we had as kids with flipping air cleaner lids :Big Laugh:

Or smelling the sweet aroma of a carbed V8 as it fired up and drove off laying sic 11's down the road!
Just thinking about it now brings smiles.

I had an 80's Mustang with a Holley, mild cam, and LT's to straight pipes and an Alpine tape deck.

The T-roof leaked like a sieve and I had to start in 2nd on wet days just to get any traction, but I cared not!

So, How did Ford address these known variables? They took one beta engine and put it in a drag race car, a Baja car, a truck, put it through paces in varying chassis and environmental situations. After this one engine had 200,000 miles on it, they tore the engine down.... and, Lo and Behold, there was almost NO wear to the bearings, cylinder bore, rings, pistons, etc.

Did they get 40mpg?

I would guess this is what you're talking about?

This thread is an interesting read about MDS. I just ordered HPTuners MPVI3 dongle, cable and 6 credits. Plus I'm gonna buy a brand new unlocked Dodge PCM from them, and they will flash it with my factory PCM data (which I will extract, save and forward to them).

I'll be gently tweaking my 5.7L (and the trans) in a few ways, but the very first tweak will be turning MDS off. If the engine or cam goes out, then it's gonna get rebuilt with a stroker kit, minus all MDS parts, of course.

Disabling the MDS may not help save you from failing lifters or general oiling issues, all I can say is (anecdotally) my old 2010 5.7L had MDS ticking almost immediately when it was brand new, and when I disabled MDS via HPtuners, the ticking stopped. I did this @ around 25,000 miles, and the truck ran flawlessly until I sold it at 110K miles.

If you have ticking *only* when MDS is activated, tune it out. Simple, easy and cheaper than opening up the engine and swapping out parts. If the noise stops...send it.

If you have lifters ticking all the time, turning off MDS likely isn't going to help you.

Throw the 5.7 in the junk pile if it goes out and swap in a stock 6.4 or go big and build a stroker 6.4 instead. The truck 6.4 is a good basis to build off,as it basically has hellcat heads and all 6.4's come with forged cranks. The 6.4 heads are better heads to build power with.
Good article here on the BGE truck 6.4,although they have the compression ratio wrong,it's actually 10:1 not 9.5:1.

Purchased this truck 5 months ago. It's at 58k miles now, no ticking. I simply dislike the chugging feeling and awful tractor-noise when MDS kicks in, plus it causes a very brief hesitation before it quits. Most people would not really care, but I seem to notice every little noise and vibration (in all vehicles), especially in the drivetrain.

I find it very interesting that your tick stopped when you disabled MDS. Do you have any theory as to why that happened??? :hmm:

This was actually my immediate thought, but I was reading somewhere (I forget where) there were compatibility issues with certain parts between the 5.7 and the 6.4???

A finely balanced, silky-smooth, non-MDS, non-eTorque 6.4L, biased towards bottom end torque would be my dream engine. Maybe with a set of long tubes too, but I'd want the exhaust to be quiet, so I'm not sure about the LT's......

If your sticking the cars higher compression 6.4 in it,you have to use your truck oil pan/oil pickup tube/front timing cover /intake manifold etc. The cars use a front sump oil pan and differant front timing cover, that mounts the alternator down low.You can buy a new long block 6.4 to.

OMG! A MDS long block? Noooooo wayyyyyyy.

My preference would be as you mentioned earlier, buy a truck 6.4L and have it rebuilt at my favorite engine shop Reid's Automotive in Whitman, MA.

That long block does look nice though, and at $6,500 is a good deal, I'd snatch that up in a minute if it had no MDS. Buying a used one and having it rebuilt would probably cost me about same amount......

Buttar up a few of your local Parts Managers at the local dealers. If they've done a warrenty replacement 6.4,alot of dealers would rather sell the old engine then send it back to Ma Mopar and then wait to get reimbursed.I've bought 5 complete 6.4 truck engines that way from my local dealer. You have to be on really good terms with the Parts Manager though, not just the guy at the parts counter

Did your 5 purchases all have MDS? I'm guessing they did, but it wouldn't matter as you'd have them rebuilt (I assume)....

The only late model 5.7 and 6.4 Hemi's that don't have mds are the 6 speed manual transmission Challengers, all other 6.4's have MDS.If you stumble across a warrenty replacement 6.4 from a manual trans Challenger ,it'll have a non-mds cam with the factory mds solenoid replacement plugs, but realistically most guys are gonna replace the cam anyways,so converting one to non-mds is pretty easy with a cam swap. The 6.2 Hellcats don't have MDS,but they're harder to come by.Basically a 6.2 is a 6.4 block with the same stroke as the 5.7's have.

If I replace the MDS cam with a non-MDS cam/lifters, along with installing the factory MDS solenoid replacement plugs.... does that get rid of all the cam/lifter issues, including any issues with long idling?

It seems there's a lot of talk about poor cam/lifter oiling on these later blocks, and warnings against idling for long periods.

From my old GM perspective.... Selling parts on the "sly" by a parts manager, which were destined for factory retrieval, has put a couple of guys in legal hot water. But, the regimes, and times regarding that may have changed. I doubt it, though.
