The last sentence in the original post is a little disturbing.

I haven't figured out why that 8 speed, with its really low first gear, and the lower parasitic power loss, hasn't beaten up the supposedly inferior 545/645, particularly in the 1/4 mile.

I would think the 8 with. 3.92 would annihilate just about anything that resembles a pick up. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

The OP has the 3.55 gears, not the 3.92's.

I'm really glad that I went with the 3.92 gears, though.

You can tell by counting the 8 shifts it will have going forward. Or you can tell by the shifter... If it is the dial shifter you have the 8 speed.

Crawl underneath rear axle, look for large sticker on axle tube by the pumpkin. It's listed in large numbers the ratio.
