Gas mileage drop on 2500

I just moved my stuff from Raymondville, TX to Rocky Mount, NC. Making the trip to the RGV my truck averaged 17mpg+ running 70 to 75 mph. On my trip back I pulled a 4x8 uhaul trailer and is was half full. I was surprised I dropped 3mpg to 14 mpg running 65mph. I was very surprised I lost that much fuel mileage with a small light trailer. I was expecting a 1 mile per gallon drop.

Enclosed trailer? Probably due to wind resistance more so than weight.

Resistance/drag is not your friend...loss of 3 mpg sounds about right.

I loose close to 2 mpg with a bed FULL of wood. Definitely around 4,000lbs. Id be happy with 3 mpg lose with an enclosed trailer.

That is actually pretty good according to the 12-12.5 mpg average on Fuelly.

Yes sir, bone stock.

With my 285/75/18 toyo mt’s and 4:88 gears i will get around 14 empty on the highway if it isnt to hilly. But as soon as there is minor hills it goes down to 12.

I was surprised that I got 17.5 mpg / 420 miles before my low fuel light came on. I filled up and it took over 24 gallons to fill a 31 gallon tank.

What is a 6.7 hemi and what are 7.3 gears? Be an interesting setup for going very SLOW.

1mpg drop is not realistic for what you describe (did you base this on something other than a WAG?). 3mpg sounds totally reasonable for towing that trailer vs. not. Lots of other factors too. Wind alone can make close to a 3mpg difference if you're driving into it one way and it's at your back the other. (this would only be 1.5 mpg change each direction) I recently hauled an empty auto trailer that probably weighed 1500# with just about zero wind resistance and it reduced my mpg by +/- 2.

Wind drag makes a bigger impact on milage than the weight.
I've seen 16 mpg towing an empty 24' enclosed car hauler (3K lbs) and just a hair under 15 mpg with a 28' enclosed weighing in at 8K lbs when the wind is calm with my EcoD. When the wind picks up significantly, I've seen the mileage drop off to 12-13 mpg.

Me too. I believe the only way to get more than 14 MPG is going down hill. I am having trouble finding any hills in Florida...LOL

I pulled an Airstream TT weighing 5500 with a quad in the bed and got 16mpg. When I put a tall cabover weighing 2500 on I got 13mpg without a trailer behind. Air resistance is the mpg killer king not weight and going slow (55) helps a lot but can create a problem for the flow of traffic.
