2011 ram 1500 I know nothing about gears but I thought at some point in my scouting the forums I saw that if you have big tires like me 35x12.5x18 is kinda.... makes your truck have a sluggish start when punching it. This is one thing I wanted to try to remedy, the other being I tow a camper and a trailer with tractor occasionally. This is my daily commuter so I wanted to know if me doing anything with the gears will kill my mileage in which case I won't do it but if it could help and not hurt my mileage.....why shouldn't I.

It depends what gears you currently have. Also do you have a hemi or 4.7? Either way, 4.56s would be nice and i cant see that hurting your city mileage. Definitely wont help on highway but i dont think it would hurt either.

Do you know what you have now? 3.55s, maybe?

Gears don't effect fuel mileage much. Those 35"s are not going to do you any good, tho. It is possible that you may get better gas mileage with 4.56s.

35"s need 4.56s. Call Matt at Moe's. Do a LSD while you're at it.

My only thing with the 4.56 gears is that if he does have a hemi his mileage will definitely take a hit because that thing will be way too fun to drive. I know if i had my 6.4 with 4.56 i wouldnt be able to keep off the skinny pedal

under 70mph it shouldnt hurt your mileage. over that, i would expect a drop. if the bulk of your driving is around town, you may even notice a small increase in mileage considering you can keep your foot out of it.

3.92 gears and 35s will perform roughly the same as 3.55 gears and the stock 33s. Anything higher will lower the effective gear ratio, which means increased performance off the line and during acceleration. But you would also lose some hwy fuel economy. A quick plug into an online engine rpm/gear ratio calculator gives us the following.

On 3.55 gears(the ratio most 5/6 spd trucks have) with the 35" tires gives you an engine speed of 1484rpm at 65mph. The same speed on 4.56 gears gives you an engine speed of 1906rpm. 500 rpm doesn't sound like much but that can be over 3mpg lost.

Hard data aside, I think you would be much happier with the performance of the truck with 4.56 gears.
