my dealership agreed to change my 3:21’s to 3:92’s for a great price. Do they need to tune for transmission shift points. This gear is not offered with the pentastar. Just trying to get a little better towing and stop the transmission from constantly searching for gears when towing. Thoughts?

Shouldn't need to touch the transmission. You are simply changing out the rear end with shorter gears. Has nothing to do with the tranny.

I wouldn’t think it would need any trans reprogramming but your speedo may need to be recalibrated.

Great move! I'm sure you'll be well pleased with the difference. The pentastar has some guts for a v6, no doubt about it. I was pretty impressed with the loaner inhaled for a day

I would think if they can get the truck to accept it has 3.92's in it, the shifting should be ok.
Just not sure if it will allow it as it isn't an option with the 3.6.
Maybe have them try to do that before the swap?

What is a great price for a gear change these days?

Can you go higher? Like 4:10”s? 3:21 to 3:92”s is a minimal change. I’m just curious is all. Hopefully it provides the improvements you are looking for.

I was going to suggest going to 4.10s myself. Good suggestion! That's honestly what I'd do. You will have more low end torque without much highway rpm increase over the 392s.

Plan on 1500/axle, you may be able to find a shop that could do it for 1k/axle, but make sure they are reputable whoever you use. I don't know if you can put 410s on your OEM carriers or not. That's something to look into. Good luck

Going to 4.10 would be 2x as expensive if not more. There are threads about it. Someone actually posted a list of parts needed. Search for this post (not sure how to hyperlink on the phone.

Going to 4.10 might require changing the carrier adding significant cost for little benefit but it could be done.

Given the fact just going from 3.21s to 3.55s comes close to doubling the towing capacity of a Ram 1500 pentastar (~4K to ~7K), I can't see going lower than 3.92.

I'd be curious to see how this will effect MPGs. Too much of a drop and you're to the point you'd be better off trading what you have in for a Ram with the Hemi and higher torque capacity 8hp70 8spd. After all, all Pentastar Rams are a little bit limited with the 8hp45 I suppose.

Just a fun fact, my brother just purchased a new 2019 Ram 1500 classic express QC 4x4 with the Pentastar. The upgrade from 3.21 to 3.55 was a whole $95 option on the sticker.

Not going lower than 3.92. Like you said, it almost doubles towing capacity!!!

3.92 is plenty low. Already almost doubles towing with this pentastar.

How does going from 3:21”s to 3:92”s “ Double his towing capacity”? I didn’t realize they change the vehicle stickering in the door jam with all the vehicle weight ratings when they change ur gears out. If you can’t tow something with 3:21”s you prolly got no Buisness towing it with 3:92”s. Will 392”s help with towing, of course, will they help that much over 321”s?- the difference would likely be noticeable, but not in a drastic way. But in the end of May give you that Little bit better performance you are looking for.

How does going from 3:21”s to 3:92”s “ Double his towing capacity...

Like said above, just going from the standard 3.21 to 3.55 raises the towing capacity from ~4400 to ~7200 on the Pentastar powered Rams. It has to do with the lighter torque loading capacity of the 8hp45 8spd that the pentastars use. They're rated at being able to handle ~350ft-lbs of torque being applied across them. Lowering the ****-end ratio increases the mechanical advantage and reduces the torque loading of the trans. Thus the ability to tow more weight.
