I'm looking to get the dual 12" Fox box enclosure. I'm on the fence as to whether I should get the ported box or the sealed box. Mostly what I am reading is that the ported enclosures work very well with the Alpine Type R's, but the base can hit hard and "boomy". I mostly don't listen to the style of music that could represent "boomy". I more so listen to alt rock. I would think a sealed box is what I should be leaning toward more. Am I right or wrong. Or could the ported box sound decent for what I listen to?

I know sweet eff all about audio but even if it is boomy as you say, wouldnt you be able to kill some of it through an eq,or via its bass gain??

If you can..... go to your local stereo shop and see if they have a ported and sealed setup you can listen to. A properly tuned sub and enclosure can really wake up sub-bass response. I prefer sealed myself. There are songs in every genre that have unbelievable bass notes. most people don't know it because of lack bass output in they're system. Good luck with your search

^^^ i couldnt agree any more. I listen to all types of music myself from hard rock to country to rap. I always go sealed because it sounds the best when doing so. ported can sound good but when you are getting a pre-fab box its not built to the exact spec for the sub.

However though make sure the box you do get is the recommended airspace from the sub manufacturer. pre-fab boxes are usually a "general" size meaning they can be greater or less than what a sub really needs.

I'm assuming you're looking at the SWR 12D4? With that said, the Alpine manual shows small sealed at .85ft^3 with a Qtc at .81, which is pretty good. It shows a recommended ported at 1.7ft^3 for a tuned frequency of 29hz, which would be taylored towards "SQ". They have a smaller sized ported recommendation but I wouldn't do it cause it would be a one note wonder. So, if it was me, I'd go sealed.
These figures are per/sub, and internal airspace is AFTER the subs internal displacement FTR
