I've got a perfectly good 2015 Sport with everything except a sunroof. Only 25K miles and it's been perfect, except for the fact I think I could use a 4WD. (That damn new truck itch) As a stop gap I purchased some Hankook Dynapro ATM's today in the hopes they'll help with traction backing up my new (bigger) trailer up the gravel drive. But, with the 2019's coming out there's a window to pick up unsold 2017 or 2018 models at perhaps one time blow out prices. I figure the 2019's are going to be more expensive like Ford. I own the Sport outright and have 2+ more years of MaxCare warranty.

Would you wait (for a 2020)......or grab a new 2017/2018 model?

Wait for 2020. You want to make sure E-Torque and it’s electrical system is ready for prime time. Wish that system used something other than a belt...

Definitely not the first year model of the Gen5. Wait a year, and let others bleed on the new technology. And congrats on owning your '15 outright. That is a fantastic position to be in!

For sure. So many things to go wrong. I went to build a 2019 online and you can order without the E-Torque system, which is a relief.

Thanks. Made it my goal to pay it off within a year or two. I try to never finance more than 15K, but it’s hard with today’s prices! Wise to wait on the 2019’s until they get the bugs out. Sport trim on the new Laramie is killer.

The end of the generation of a model is usually the best with all the kinks ironed out

Some of this "getting the kinks worked out" thing is a bit overblown IMO. Sure, some brands/models have had first year problems but it's not as if they are all just plagued and should be avoided. I have one of the first 6.4 Hemi 2500s and it's been great. And, more statistically relevant, there have really been no large scale or widespread problems with these trucks as a whole.

But everyone knows having 4x4 for pulling a camper is unnecessarily and a waste if you have a lsd right?? Lol! Just kidding, I couldn't resist! I get tired of all those types of posts on rv.net.

I totally understand wanting 4x4, I won't buy a truck without it personally. I just used mine this week trying to get off the street into my snowy side yard. Spun in 2hi, (and i have the anti spin diff) reached over and clicked it into 4hi and she crawled right through, no problem!

If you can find a great deal on a 17/18 Go for it! You'll love having the 4x4 even if you don't use it much. When you need it it's priceless. Good luck

Not sure how this link is going to show here but it is one random site that compares general complaints by year for Ram 1500 2012 thru 2017. It indicates a definite downward trend after 2014 with 2017 having the fewest complaints listed. My point being that the 2017 and I assume the 2018 models are the "mature" level of the Gen 4. On this page you can click on each year for a breakdown of complaints for that year.

If you’re really into it and want to get a new truck, go for it. I’d also sick with a 2017/2018. I’ve had several cars(actually my last two) that were the second model year, and even they had a lot of bugs that got worked out. It’s always just the little annoying things.

I like the "last year's model" deals...dumb heavy discounts is why I bought my '17 last month.

I look at it this way, if I can say that the current model still is a vehicle that I want to have for a while, I'll go for it. We dealt with this and out Chrysler T&C. We knew the Pacifica was coming out, and yes, it looks nicer...but...dollar for dollar, to get the same features in a new Pacifica as we did in out T&C, it was nearly $10K more.

...that and I do not trust all new models on their first year run.

I remember local Ford places discounting the crap out of '04 Terminator Cobras when the '05 was coming out with a redesign...if I would have only had the coin to get one new back then...they also did the exact same thing with the '04 Lightning.

I wouldn't buy the first few years of a design change as vehicle manufacturers are very slow to work out the bugs.

The new Ram wouldn't be on my list until at least 2021.

I bought a 2017 leftover at the end of December and got a ROCKING good deal. Keep your eyes open for some big discounts around the time of Presidents Day in the next week or two. Go get something new. Don't wait. You know you want it. You can hear it calling your name now (TruckNut, buy me, take me home)... (yes I've been called a bad influence before). Be sure to post pictures of your new truck when you get it next week.

getting the itch sucks....i get it way too much lol

Honestly since you have a 2015 you are not going to be getting what feels like an upgrade except for having 4x4 and possibly a sunroof if you get a 2017 or 2018. On the high end 2018's and maybe just the limited you can get the radio with apple car play and android auto but is that worth new payments for what would feel like the same truck you have now?

Just saying if you get a 2017 or 2018 the itch might come back a lot faster than you think. If you like the 5th gen design it might be better to wait a year and get a 2020

Yeah...this is a good point. I went from an Express quad cab to a Big Horn crew cab...so for me, it was a big change in scenery.

The money you'd save now getting the last of a generation might be made for (further in the future) if you were to trade in a 2019. Because it'll then be a current generation truck ...vs the 2018 which will be the old generation. And there will be a lot of old generation Rams out there, so it'll be nothing special in a few years. The physical appearance between the 3rd gens and the 4th gens is pretty similar. There looks to be a bigger difference between the 4th-5th generations from what I see (wheel wells, no side body lines, grille, no bulbus hood, etc).

Usually at the end of a generation of vehicles, owners are like, "they'll never make a better vehicle than this!" ....and then a couple years later the new vehicles look, drive, and feel superior and everybody wants them and loves them.

OTOH, if you tend to trade trucks every couple yrs, what difference does it make? You'll be getting a different truck in 2021 anyway, right? Do you REALLY need 4x4?

If you want to get a new truck, then follow your heart. If you want a LOGICAL approach, then keep what you have for another 5 years. You put no mileage on it and the Maxcare is good for another period anyway. Vehicle purchases are 99% emotional and we all know it, no matter how many different ways we try to justify the idea! This old guy has owned three trucks in the last 25 years each for 12-13 years prior to buying my CPO '14 last summer. In the course of ownership I have put less than 80K on the first two in the time period of ownership and I bought my current truck with the midget that the lifetime Maxcare warranty I paid for my tail is covered until it is literally covered in dirt! Plus the truck is in both our names as is the warranty so even after I kick, my wife can torment the roadways knowing that whatever goes wrong will have a warranty!

Good luck with your decision and enjoy the new truck that i know you will wind up buying.

I live in a snowy climate, so I will never own a 2wd SUV or truck ever again. I can understand wanting to get a new vehicle with 4wd. Life is short- play hard :)
