My 2500 is an SLT but has the Outdoorsman Off-Road package so has everything except leather, heated seats/steering wheel, and sunroof. I have the full length console with touch screen etc. No Ram Boxes either. Pretty equivalent to a Big Horn I'd guess. Mine weighs 7240 with 1/2 tank of fuel and me in it (275lbs)

Interesting, so less than a bare bones tradesman

He is 238 lbs more than my 3 option tradesman. And if mine was a shortbed...he would be about 400lbs heavier.

Edit.. Just seen he said with him in it. But that is probably almost a wash with the other half a tank of gas.

ok, he said... "Mine weighs 7240 with 1/2 tank of fuel and me in it (275lbs)" so his truck weighs about 6965 with 1/2 tank of gas. SO assuming his is a standard tank his truck weighs 7065 with a full tank

Kind of crazy where the weight comes in. A stripped 1500 CC is what 5400lbs min is 6000. so 600lbs of luxury crap LOL!

Rambox, sunroof, MFT are heavy :)

I was just saying this in regards to the fact that base weight is a full tank of gas.

And then I also realized his is a shortbed.

So if you were comparing his numbers to mine...it wasnt apples to apples was all.

So just for comparison 4x4 gas crew cab 6'4 bed.

Base trim...tradesman.

1500 weighs 5318
2500 weighs 6648.

A 2500 crew with 8 foot bed weighs 6837.

Chart numbers. Basically the lightest version you can buy

Of course...a quad cab 2wd v6 will weigh even less for the 1500 and a diesel 2500 will weigh even more.

My truck only has 3 options. The chrome package, trailer tow mirrors and the protection group. They added 112 pounds to mine.

It really is crazy how fast the options add weight.

My payload is 2973 so it came off the line at 7027 however it was sitting at that time.

I added Trail Ridge tow mirrors after I got that 7240 weight and also a tri fold tonneau cover

I'm wondering what would make manufacturers aim for something less than the 8500lbs GVWR that separates EPA's Light Duty vehicle (<=8500 lbs) vs EPA's Medium Duty Vehicle (8501-10000lbs).

It looks like there's this:

So maybe a GVWR of 7100 is the magic number to get an ALVW of 5750?

But that doesn't sound right either. Assuming a 1500/f150 truck is going to weigh more than 4400lbs, they're going to be in the "Light-Duty Truck 4" category. So if that's the case, what's preventing them from aiming for the 8500lbs GVWR?

According to the people at RAM they talked to people in the general public that wanted more MPG out of their trucks because they can tow plenty, when in reality they cannot tow plenty.

There is so much misinformation and lack of knowledge everywhere.

My guess is if RAM moved the GVWR to the ~8500lbs they would have to move the CVWR down by the same or ~1400lbs then they could only claim to tow ~9500lbs and the "general public" would go OMFG those truck cannot tow anything.

How much do people expect to tow with a half ton? The tow numbers have gotten so stupid people actually think using a 1500 for 10klbs will be a comfortable experience... and if you think it feels ok, tow the same 10klbs load with a 2500 and you will wonder why you ever bothered with a 1500.

Especially these monster travel trailers.

Wife works with a guy that has a new F150. She thought it was a 250 and just for conversation sake asked if it was a 250. He said no it's a 150. I don't need a 250 cause that will tow 14,000lbs. geeezzz. Good luck with that

Buddy has a 5th wheel TT. Felt his F250 gasser was getting tired.

Same trailer is now on a F150 super crew ecoboost. Truck eats shocks, brakes, tires, springs replaced twice before installing after market air bags... but he is under payload and maximum tow capacity, both by just a hair. Axle bearings are noisy, u-joints clunk and ring and pinion are starting to whine. 60,000mi.

He says the power is better, but nothing else on the F150 can hold a candle to the old F250s previous 250,000mi chassis.

GVWR is not as important as GAWR (front and rear) which take into account axle and tire capacities. GVWR is set to meet certain targets and usually much < front + rear capacity. For example, some mfg derate trailers so they stay under the 26k combined threshold. So on paper the trailer GVWR may be 12k but in reality its 20k + tongue (if using 10k axles). I'm more concerned (from a safety perspective) with the guy that exceeds the axle/tire caps then the guy that is over 100 or 200 lbs over on his GVWR but well under both axle capacities. Just my opinion. I'm sure the weight police will feel different but whatever.
