Well after some 75 year old woman felt she had to save two seconds and make a left turn into oncoming traffic failing to yield the right of way. I am sad to say my beloved awesome 2016 1500 limited in going to be pronounced and i will soon be in the horrible circuit of dealing with clown saleman that i will want to choke in the first 2 minutes im sure. Looking to go to a 2500 and it doesnt seem like there are many real options for power train other than 6.4 or I6 Cummins. Trans seam to be all the same, either the 8 speed or 68rfe 6 speed which ive heard has issues. What is all your opinions and input. Below is my baby after being punched in the face. I pull 7k pretty much max trailer.

No issues with my 6 speed trans mated to 6.4. Rock solid and hauls like a champ. Unless you need the tugging power of a diesel, recommend steering away as it puts a big hit on payload capacity for a 2500, and ultimately trailering.

Try the Ram dealer vendors in that section. Granger Motors and Mark Dodge. @AnthonyRI posted some information about 2500s.

Hope you are alright, looks like a hard hit! Sorry about the truck.
Thank you, 3 broken ribs , a leg that looks like its from a corpse and numerous others pains and bruising that developes daily. Wish people would just be more attentive and patient while behind the wheel. Its getting way too congested and crazy on the roads near me

I've had the 6.4 with a 6 speed behind it, and the 6.7 with a six speed behind it. They're really your only two engine options in the HD Ram trucks, they 5.7 is no longer available in it. Newer 6.4s have the 8 speed behind them, which from what I have read does improve driveability and mileage, but I didn't really have any issues with my 6 speed one.

If you buy a new one, take care of it and it will take care of you (don't rag on it, keep the fluids fresh and full, etc). My 6.4's only real issue at around 110k was the MAP sensor died and the truck wouldn't run, and it took them a good month to figure it out with a Chrysler engineer, because since it wouldn't run they couldn't pull good data off it. There have been, especially in older 6.4's, issues with the cam and lifters, but I haven't heard of many from the 2017 model year and newer. Remember, MOST people won't have any issues, forums will make any issue seem like a bigger problem than it really is for the most part.

The 6.7 itself is pretty stout, and as long as you don't go crazy with upping the power, the 6 speed behind it holds up pretty well for the most part. It does want to get into the highest gear possible as quickly as possible when you're cruising, so some guys lock it out of higher gears when driving around town. I personally don't, because I'm usually only at lower speeds for 3-5 minutes then I'm back to highway speeds. The biggest issues with the 6.7 (and really any diesel today) are the aftertreatment systems, DEF systems seem to clog up from time to time but it seems at least to me to be correlated with trucks that sit or idle a lot. DPF systems will clog up if regens aren't allowed to finish, or if you aren't working the motor hard (towing/driving at expressway speeds). Diesels have NEVER been happy just tooling around town, and the aftertreatment systems just make it worse.

If you aren't towing heavy, are just driving around town, or don't have a good reason for the higher fuel mileage of a diesel, I would suggest sticking with a gasser. I put a LOT of highway miles on my truck, and do about once a month pull a good size load, so the diesel made sense for me. In about 18 months I've put almost 30k on my truck, a good 10k of it pulling trailers. I did the same with my 6.4, in 5 years I put 110k on it, though not pulling near as much.

Ultimately it's up to you and what you want to do with it, but the general advice is that if you aren't pulling or driving a LOT, go for the gasser - it's cheaper to maintain if something should happen.

The new Ram 2500's are supposed to be coming soon, that may or may not affect your decision with Ram having an update right around the corner.

I'd also consider the GM 6.6 gas 2500. That engine is better than the 6.4, though there is a little concern by some about the 10 speed, whereas the ZF 8 speed in the Ram is pretty bullet proof. Win some, lose some.

The 2500 gasser with the 8 Speed, since U do not tow a lot. Just my thoughts, and what I would do if I was forced to.
CAVEAT: I am not upgrading because I do not want any early during or post covid trucks, believe the QC went to chit due to Covid and now the status of the auto industry, but just my OPINION.

SORRY bout yer ride, but screw the ride. As long as U come out OK in the end, all that matters. Good thing U were in a big truck and not a Fiat 500, lol.

Got a friend, works in service industry, his shop has a bunch of 6.6's. According to him, total Dog, tho the GM 10 speeds are supposed to be better than the Ford 10 speeds.

It's not at all a dog lol. It has 401 hp vs the 410 from the 6.4 hemi, but has more torque at 464 vs 429 in the hemi ... and now comes with a 10 speed.

They may be basing their opinion on the older 6 speed, when that engine came out the first 2 years or so it was stuck with the 6 speed. With the 10, it's much improved.

The 2500 comes in either the 6.4 or 6.7 flavor. That's it on the newer models.

Depending on your planned usage would determine which you need. Either transmission will be fine. The 68RFE isn't a problematic transmission as long as you treat it reasonably and use it as intended. Crank up the power to the engine and it will go boom.

If it were me....... If I towed <10k lbs travel trailer and towed in relatively moderate inclines/declines I'd go with the Hemi. If I towed a lot of flatbed trailers below 10k, also Hemi.

If I towed (or planned to tow) >10k travel trailer (or maybe some really heavy flatbeds) long distances and over steeper inclines/declines I'd absolutely pick the Cummins. I'd suggest the Hemi for your use case. You'd never use the Cummins to its potential.

As for the GM 10-speed... it's essentially the same 10 speed that Ford is using. I wouldn't touch either one with someone else's stick.

Also, it's been discussed here, the Powerline ZF 8 speed is supposed to be the Cummins transmission for the new models

Really sorry about your accident, glad you weren't seriously hurt I reside in upstate NY some really bad drivers the blue hairs are the worst, the 10 speed GM is just as bad as the Ford W all of the shifting problems now the GM Duramax that has the 10 speed has a problem of locking up in reverse, I would look into the Ram 2500 6.4 before suckulantis throws a monkey wrench into one of the last V-8.

Thank you all for your responses. I have been a loyal customer to Mopar brands for years now, owning 3 rams (03,07,16) 2018 chrysler 300, 2015 jeep Cherokee Limited and a Dodge Durango R/T.
What I DONT like about Mopar is the current state of its customers service and the complete outsourcing of it that is so detatched from truly giving any indication or effort to assist you. Unfortunately i have been left in the dark by them in the past. Ruled out GMC altogether. Im at a toss between another ram or leaving to the dark side and looking at an F250 (I know, i probably wont and I really dont want to lol)

The grass is not always greener, as they say, as I know of folks who've switched brands only to find disappointment in another way. It's more important that the vehicle satisfy your requirements than who's name is on it.

I see you're in New York. My dealer has excellent service history with me. Let me know if you're in the Rochester, NY area.

Dusty

Take a look at the Titan XD. Especially if you’re only towing 7k. It would handle that easily. The 5.6 with the 9 speed is strong and you get a lot of nice creature comforts for the money.
