Mufflers and pipes are 409 S.S., aren't they? Should work for headers too.

Tradeoff is ferritic stainless doesn't retain finish like austenitic does, cause there's no nickel alloy.

Always thought it was weird to use food grade stainless for engine exhaust hidden under a hood only so it looks nice on display with the hood open.

But whatever. Some guys are about show along with their go.

Well, I'm not so crotchety as to not appreciate good looks.

All depends on the funds for all of ones projects.

I grew up in the era of mild steel thinwall headers,so for the price of them,as long as they're a stainless steel header i'd use them,especially for the price of them,lol. Even being cheap 201, odds are they'll outlast the length of time you'll own the truck

Do you think they would be fine with the high temp if they were wrapped? That was my concern with the lower grade stainless steel. I do not have the big issue of corrosion here.

Hemiman pretty well covered it Brenden. Header heat kills any hoses/wiring etc that are in the vinicity of the headers,and is hard on the steering shafts knuckle.If it was me,i'd be wrapping them,as wrap also keeps the knock sensors happier,while promoting exhaust velocity which promotes better cylinder scavenging

Exactly my thought would no doubt wrap them just wanted to make sure. Thanks Rick and @HEMIMANN . Seriously considering to be the test bed here lol.

Addendum: weld guys get nervous cause if they use too hard enable weld rod, too high heat input, and don't pre and post heat, their welds can crack with the higher thermal cycling with wrapping.

All this means is they don't want to control their welding processes and materials consistently, or want a common weld rod for all their work.

Back to original point - the steel tubes don't care - the welding has to be done correctly not to have a hardenable weld joint prone to thermal cycling cracking.
