Hello from Houston

I'm a newb looking for some help. I have a 79 Power Wagon with 318 with 4 barrel Edelbrock carb. It also has the original automatic transmission. It's a little stiff putting into gear, but no problems shifting while driving. I would like to swap the engine for something with a little more power & better mpg. Any suggestions?
I appreciate the insight.
