I just had my 46re transmission rebuilt. I was told that the check valve or torque converter anti blow back had previously been drilled out. So now when I put it in drive or reverse it goes no where ! He told me to start it in neutral and let warm up then it will pull sometimes!! However I've had truck for 10 years and it's been shifting weather the check valve had been previously drilled or not!! I'm trying to figure this out?? If I go out right now and start truck and put it in drive it will roll backwards but if I put brake on and put in neutral then wait a few minutes and put in gear she'll catch!! Anyone have any ideas what I'm going through or what I need to fix this??? This wasn't ever a issue before it went out ?? This is on a 2001 dodge ram 1500 2 wheel drive!!!!

if it was just rebuilt, why the hell wouldn't they have fixed it while it was out?! Sounds like the screwed something up, and are trying to blame it on something preexisting.

If your check valve isn't working, what you describe will happen and usually will be worse if you park on a hill.

Easy way to tell, start the truck, put it in neutral for about a minute, drop it into gear. If the gear engages right away every time, the check valve is bad/been modified. Some people do this because a stuck check valve will smoke the transmission very quickly.
The original check valve is in the one trans line, usually up near the radiator right before the trans lines make the turn up to go to the radiator.

torque converter drainback. even the mildest of shift kits have the fix included in the parts that come with them. I like the TF-OD jr, for a shift kit for those trannys. It involves replacing one of the valves in valve body. with said valve replaced, you wont have to put it in neutral for the pump to fill converter any more. Or have to put it into Neutral to check fluid level anymore, like every other Dodge automatic from the 60s forward.
that check valve is in one of the cooler lines. Its a spring loaded plastic (maybe wooden?) ball about the size of a marble, right at the end where the cooler like hooks to the trans. \
they've been known to stick shut and overheat/cook the trans. Look at trans cooler lines right by radiator. If it has this, it will have a rubber "whip" leading into the radiator on one of the cooler lines. the converter draining back wont actually hurt it. jsut run it in neutral a minute or 2 before you take off and itll work fine. They don't "all" do it, but many do. Even my 1st car, a 76 Charger SE (same as the Cordoba except grille, taillights and 1st charecter of the VIN, otherwise identical) with a 727 trans did this. My Dad drove it ~50k miles before handing it down to me. and it did it the whole time I had it., just on 1st start of the day. I ran the **** out of that car and never killed the trans.
