My 2018 PW is knocking on start up then goes away after a few minutes. Brought it to the dealer over a month ago, and they said its normal. Well, now its getting worse and more frequent, so I have to bring it back in a couple weeks and leave them the truck for a couple days, so they can hear it when the truck starts up cold. Truck only has 9400 miles on it. I'm so pissed.

Brought it back and dealer said it was the normal Hemi knock on start up.Takes a few minutes for the oil to suck up, on a cold start. Ok. My 2014 5.7 never made that noise, so im not sure what to think. My buddy has a 2015 6.4 Challenger 392 and it doesn't make that noise. Kinda different set up, I get it, but Cmon. Truck runs awesome, tons of power, no issues so I guess, except when I start it, and it sounds like it has has a Cummings motor, that's normal.Lol. The plus side is my dealer said its documented with Ram/Chrysler, Dodge, whatever theyre called now, the engine is covered under my powertrain warranty for 3 more years, and they said since its documented, if the motor ***** he bed after the warranty is up, they will cover it.

My 2015 6.4 has a cold start knock as well. I had a 2010 Ram 2500 with a 5.7 that had a cold start knock. My dealer put a new short block in around 13,000 miles for the noise and the new short block knocked too. They referred to it a "piston to bore phenomenon".

In layman's term the noise is piston slap when the engine is first started cold. GM 4.8, 5.3, 6.0 engines from the 2000's are famous for it. My wife had a 2004 Tahoe we purchased new and it knocked cold. My dad drives drives it now. It's 16 years old with over 150,000 miles and it still knocks when cold.

Yeah. Piston slap.

The knocking noise is the rod or piston skirt contacting the bottom of the bore. Since the bottom of the bore doesnt really affect power (which is made at the top of the bore/combustion chamber in the head), it most likely wont make any difference to the life of the engine.

I could see a case being made that it would scuff aluminum which would end up in the oil, but probably a longshot it would cause any damage since we have oil filters and stuff :)
