So upon further investigation the noise does in fact quiet down at op temp, however it isn't completely gone. really praying for a broken bolt not slap or lifter issues.... dealer is dragging their feet....

Hey guys just looking for suggestions on what would cause a tapping noise at operating temp on a 2011 ram hemi sport. i just had the manifold bolts replaced, cold start its smooth as silk but by the time i get across town to grab coffee in the drive thru i hear a loud tapping from both sides of the engine but it goes away after driving a bit. Seems to happen more when at quarter full operating temp if that helps. i took a video of the noise from cold start to when the tapping starts which is about 5 mins idling but i shortened it. Any suggestions are appreciated! Could my manifolds be warped?
Thanks in advance!

I bought an 04 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi. It was tapping. I scoped it and the tapping seemed to be all over the engine. I was told by many mechanics and forums that lifters are the problem. I went through all the work of removing the heads only to find out there was nothing wrong with the lifters. It was pushrods that get worn at one end because on a Hemi the pushrods work against the lifter at an angle instead of straight on like most engines. CHECK THE PUSHRODS BEFORE YOU PULL THE HEADS OFF. They were between 4/7 thousand shorter with a pointed end on the intake lifters. That mistake cost me over a $1,000. A new set of pushrods cost less than a hundred bucks and 4hrs labour installing them.

Hi Cshaffer126,

Please be sure to keep us updated on your dealer's findings. If our team can be of any additional assistance while your truck is in service, we'd be happy to help. We are just a PM away.

Op,

My 11 sport with 131k had a similar noise. I have broken manifold bolts and just have not got around to replacing them.

My noise, except for the cold start manifold leak, went away upon switching to redline 5w30 and has not returned.

I average driving 2,700 to 3,200 miles per month for work in my ram so I'm changing oil at least quarterly.

If I ever have time to fix my manifolds it would be doubtful I could hear my truck running standing next to it.

My hemi may fail tomorrow, but as of right now, when it gets past initial cold start and the leaking manifold stop making noise, my ram is very quiet.

Suggest you might spend some time reading the synthetic oil thread. it could make a difference.

From a real world prospective, my ram is driven on average 90 miles between stops, and is rarely started Friday, Saturday or Sunday, so if you are driving stop and go, it does make a difference in engine noise as the constant up and down shifting in my experience makes the piston slap more noticeable. I do not notice piston slap as once started i usually have an hour and a half before i am outside the truck again. By then the cylinders are round, the truck is warm and noises have been reduced. Very similar to what you said with your 11.

by the way, my truck is almost a twin to yours.......

Dealer said it needs a new Cam and Lifters . Absolutely blows my mind at only 11k miles.... they also don’t have a rental for me

There's a YouTube video where a mechanic is showing in some year models of the 5.7 the cam would flatten, quickly. As if they cast it wrong. I'll try to post if I find it. RAM has stated they have updated the CAM for the past couple of years every year...

Have an oil analysis done and check for metal (iron) contamination. If any metals are high chances are you have a bad lifter or several and it’s wearing down your camshaft. I Had one go on my 2011. It is a manufacturing defect but if you don’t have the max care warranty it will cost about 4500.00. Cam, all the lifters, push rods, timing chain and gear were all replaced on mine. Always used amsoil signature synthetic and always changed it at OEM required time. It’s a failure you can not prevent. Happens anytime past 80k miles. Good luck.

Man, these trucks are noisy. I don't think I have motor issues, per se. But I've never owned a vehicle with such a noisy motor. The weird thing is it doesn't seem to be consistent. I've too noticed it being noisier right after an oil change. However, I think that is due to changing oil brands. The last oil change, I did not notice a change at all. I think that's because I stayed with the same oil (QSUD) that's been working well for me.

I have no ticking on startup (right now, have in the past). I do have a little tapping from time to time after it's warmed up. But nothing like in the videos posted.

I bought Lifetime Maxcare - so I guess I'm not gonna sweat it. Truck runs like a top, no CEL's and MPG's are good. I really need to stay off of the forum. It makes me paranoid and gives me projects lol.
My 16 6.4 is exactly as you describe. Has almost 50k now runs great. Dam nosey ass motors. We are just not used to it.my 14 5.7 is very quiet

Hi Cshaffer126,

Thank you very much for your follow-up, I'm glad to see that your dealer was indeed able to locate a rental for you. If it would be of interest, I'd be happy to escalate a case on your behalf to connect you with a case specialist who can serve as your advocate while your truck is in service. Simply follow up with me via PM to get the process started.

I appreciate the offer and will keep it in mind. It appears my dealer seems to be making a good effort to ensure it gets taken care of quickly. They overnighted some lifters from another dealer and expect to have it done next week. My concern will only begin if this doesn’t fix the problem!

I've put about 30,000 mile on my replacements and no problems.

Thank you for your follow-up, I'm very happy to hear that you are in good hands with your dealer! However, I certainly understand what you mean. If you are still experiencing this concern after the repair, we'd be more than happy to get involved.

Update as of today :

no ticking sound currently present,

dealer replaced cam and lifters( no apparent wear in cam but a few lifters had rough but not blown bearings) few small marks present on cam lobes indicating the beginning of uneven wear . I’d say this is inconclusive

dealer used pensoil platinum synthetic 5w20. I had mobile 1 synthetic 5w30 previously.

will report tomorrow morning if it makes a noise or not on cold start.

Is it possible that 5w30 is actually not all that great for these engines with MDS? Do we have conclusive evidence of it being better ?

I would like to point out that the normal lifter noise is certainly more noticeable with 5w20

For anybody that cares or is still watching this thread: no tick on startup , it would appear that it was indeed a lifter/cam issue .

It you haven't already, head over to the synthetic oil thread. It is less the oil weight (though that is still a big part) and more the oil composition. A lot of us have had huge success with Redline 5w30. It is expensive but not as expensive as new cams and lifters. There's a lot of guys over there with a lot more knowledge on the matter than I.

Or check out this post by @Hemi395 on oil Choice

Here's mine at less than 6K miles. You can really hear it at around the 1:30 minute mark
