Long story short. Heard intermittent ticking. Brought in to dealership under warranty. Manager was able to hear it but tech can’t replicate so it’s been there a week now with nothing actually done. They claim they won’t “take engine apart without knowing it needs to be done” I told them I heard it the most after I did last oil change. (RP 5-20). Manager told me that might be the issue that the 5.7 doesn’t like full synthetic oil. Any truth to this? What would my best option be? Thanks everyone!

If any service manager or so-called tech tells you the 5.7 HEMI does not like full synthetic engine oil it's time to find a new dealership to establish a relationship with.

At my dealership, when a customer comes in with the HEMI tick we don't have to wait to duplicate the noise on majority of the cases. We inspect the exhaust manifold bolts to make sure the sound of the exhaust leak is not being confused as the lifter noise. Then, which might be a big surprise to your dealer, we put lifters in the motor and inspect the camshaft while we are inside. That might be breaking news for your dealer though.

Trust me, I’ll be sure to mention this tomorrow when I got back in! Thank you!

Blame the synthetic oil and not the lifters? You could always ask him if you let him use conventional oil and it still ticked would he tear down the engine? If not why even mention that ridiculous statement.

So how are you still under warranty on a 2013? We need a lot more info on best way forward. Do you have warm idle tick? Never codes? How long have you had hemi tick? Have you ruled out exhaust bolts? Have you not heard about or tried redline or lubegard? If you think you have a warranty issue I would get a uoa from blackstone as ammo and use them to change the oil. If that route fails, we do have some answers to hemi tick.

Sorry for the confusion. It’s 2017 with 37k on it. Notice it more as a cold start tick and def when I first turned it over after oil changes. I have my last two Blackstone uoa’s ready to go (both looked good btw) never any codes. Exhaust bolts are ruled out by both me and the dealership. Tick was there 2 years ago when I bought it but then went away. I’ve heard of redline (used it in other cars) but not lube guard. My fear is that I change oils and such but the damage is already done and it becomes an issue later when I’m no longer under it’s gonna cost a ton compared to fixed now. Just don’t know why they won’t open it up and see at this point.

What?! The preferred recommendation by his manufacturer is Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, which is a FULL synthetic oil!

Does the guy sell french fries @ Mac's on weekends?

fca simply doesnt care about hemi tick period, they will only fix it if it fails 90% of the time, once in a while a dealer will fix hemi tick, but those are rare.

redline hemi tick

lubegard hemi tick thread

might need to use laptop or better to see polls instead of phone. does it tick at warm idle?

Hahahahaha right!? I looked at him crossed eyed like you have to be kidding. Typical. We’ll see how it all plays out.

I haven’t heard anything at warm idle so I’m assuming the cam is still ok

Sounds like yours is a great service department. I wish RAM made all the service departments be like that...

I have unfortunately worked in other shops like the one the OP is complaining about and he has every right to call B.S. on their story because it sounds like a load of manure and an excuse to me. My guess is that they have had too many charge-backs on warranty claims for lifter failures and it's probably because the customer concern was misdiagnosed but the techs were too far into the job to turn back so they had to stick to the story they gave the customer.

I'd like to see their CSI Score and their FFV score which is Fixed First Visit. With stories like that it can't be that great when the FFV surveys come in.

Where does one find a 700 page owners manual? The manual with our truck is basically a pamphlet.

Apparently you guys down south can't get the big printed manual anymore, although it still seems to be available for us Canucks. As Retired says you have to download it now,and there has been some changes to the downloadable version,as they've removed the 5W-30 designation, and rumour mill says either the EPA or the CAFE boards were the cause of FCA having to remove the 5W-30 reconmendation.

Update: Truck is still at the dealership. I did get a follow up phone call today saying they couldn’t duplicate the ticking and they think it’s cause I put full synthetic RP in. I called ******** immediately and pulled out my Blackstone sheets. I had to fight tooth and nail but I got them to agree to pull the valve covers and check to see if there is any lifter/cam damage. Don’t understand why it had to be this difficult! Fingers crossed! Thanks again for all the help/advice!

Good luck getting them Chrysler (RAM) to do anything regarding taking the engine apart. If you call 6 different Chrysler (RAM) service shops, you'll get 6 different answers. At least one will tell you that it's completely normal, nothing to worry about - which I disagree with (lifter noise - assuming that's what it is - imho is never good)! Most will have you bring the truck in, and then a week later they'll say they couldn't duplicate the problem (maybe give you a free oil change and tell you to come back in 2000 miles), at least one will tell you that they've never heard of the hemi tick, and then everything in-between based on whether the service tech has one week servicing the hemi - or 10 years. I had tick on cold start with a brand new hemi, anytime I didn't start it at least once every 24-36 hours. Filters didn't make a difference (Mopar, Wix, RP, etc). Redline 5w20 completely, totally, eliminated the tick. I've also used Schaeffer's 9000 with the same results on another 5.7L hemi. Both high in moly. Whichever you can get easier and at the best price ... Biotech/Lubegard is an additive that many also will say fixes the problem - I haven't tried, but I believe that it's also high in moly. Definitely worth the try, yes it'll be $60-$80 for the oil, but it prevented my stomach from hurting every time I started the truck. Good luck.
