Been chasing this problem for awhile. Very first start of the day is great. Wait an hour and it hesitates. Fuel pump pressure is good. Checked for leaking injectors by pulling and checked for leaks while priming. I installed new:

battery
throttle body
crank sensor
Starter
IAT sensor
Egr valve

Cleaned all ground connections. Inspected all fuses. Truck has 42K mikes owned since new. No codes thrown ever. Alternator passes charging test. Charges at 14.2 volts with AC and headlights turned on. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you check the fuel filter?

Don’t think this one has one externally.

My truck will do this sometimes too. I've tried running redline fuel system cleaner and that seemed to help with the first morning starts.

I'm at a loss as well.

I feel like the fuel pump may not be the issue. When it struggles, it’s like the battery is weak but it’s not.

Just installed mopar starter about 6 months ago. Shortly thereafter, it was doing the same thing. I don’t have a heat shield though the truck never had one.

I decided to install new oem champion plugs and started to run 89 octane fuel. Once again no change in hard starting. Since my last post, I took it to a shop which specializes in trouble shooting problems like mine. They determined that the fuel pump which was drawing 9 amps vs 6. Replaced fuel pump. Truck has superior acceleration and drives well. UNFORTUNATELY, it did not fix the hard start.
PS. Truck starts perfectly every cold start (very first start of the day).

The only sensor you've not changed is the cam sensor.

Actually, I did replace the cam sensor. It is located at the front of the engine just below Alternator. That's what you are referring to?

Yes, often the cam and crank sensors will have the same symptoms.

What are the symptoms of the hot start?
Engine cranks excessively before starting?
Slow cranking?

At cold start, there is no hesitation. Fires right up. Once it sits for about 30-60 minutes after initial drive, it slowly cranks. It will then process to turn over quickly and not start.

I would have to apply a little pressure to accelerator pedal for it to start.

For a hot start try putting the pedal all the way to the floor holding it then crank. Be ready for a sudden start. Describe the startup..

Still sounds like a starter sticking from to much heat.
I experienced the same thing after my headers install, had to fabricate a heat shield. This was on a previous truck.
What's the cold cranking Amps on your battery?

I thought about making a heat shield though I did not have one for 13 years and it started fine. CCA 850...I had the charging system checked. It passed with flying colors.

Holding the pedal down when starting is the fuel cutoff mode. Used when flooded. If it instantly fired up.. it points at injectors. What do the spark plugs look like? Do you have a cylinder that is running rich?
