I'm finally looking at getting back into a Ram truck after several years. I really like a local one that's for sale but have a concern. It's a 07' std cab w/ 160k, 4.7 v8. Current owner says it needs a pinion bearing in the rear differential and so it hasn't been driven. My question is this.... first of all is that normal? I guess i could get so worn that it's not driveable. How can a mechanic check the tranny pre purchase with out driving the truck?? I don't have much mechanical background so forgive me if this is a goofy question. TIA!!

Yup pinion bearings are a common problem. If you have to replace pinion bearings that means carrier bearings and wheel bearings while it’s apart. As far as trans go it’s hard to check them sitting still!
