So, this noise just started yesterday milage 54k on a 04 5.7 Ram 1500 extremely well maintained. I thought it would be a belt or tensioner, but I did the water pump about 6 months ago and changed every tensioner and pulley along with the belt. I changed the oil running a Napa gold filter 5-30 oil. The noise goes way at about 2500rpms I have isolated it to the center of the engine under the manifold with a stethoscope. I took the belt off and ran it still there nothing coming from the valve covers or heads nothing coming from either side of the block. I am at a point where do I just live with it? the truck sits mostly as it was used to pull a small camper that I got rid of a year ago I am hoping someone has run into this I just hate noises. Help! I tried to post a video but no matter how short it is keeps saying file to large.

Well since you already ruled out that its not a belt issue because the noise is still there with it off. Did you check down near the trans/flex plate area to make sure nothing is rubbing?. Only other thing I can think of is maybe the timing chain guide/tensioner broke and its rubbing metal to metal it happens on these.

Yes thought about that flex plate good and noise is not coming from the timing chain cover could be a tensioner but no chin slap it's driving me crazy wish it would break then I could fix it.

I would agree with the replies above - it's definitely not a lifter and doesn't sound internal. I also don't think it's the timing tensioner because without that being properly in place, your timing would be off. Can you hear the sound when you are under the truck, specifically around the torque converter? Does the sound change with increased RPMs, or is it just consistent and then goes away at 2500 RPMs?

That's just it the noise is all over if I get my scope under the manifold, it seems more prevalent towards the middle of the engine. It is there much worse at low rpms unless eng noise is drowning it out at higher rpms I can't hear it at all hwy speeds going to disconnect the converter and see if it makes any difference I'm usually pretty good with noises but this one has me stumped I was a prev ASE certified master tech up untill 2010 heavy duty specialist. Thanks for chiming in.

I was thinking it may possibly be the torque converter as well. I was hoping you would be able to hear it more from under the truck if that were the case.

Good luck! Keep us updated!

I know you said the sound changes at higher RPM but does it follow the RPM progressively or drop off? I'm wondering because it doesn't necessarily sound like a direct RPM based sound. I've had heat shields/various metal attachments come loose in the past and I would have sworn they were a pulley/belt. If they are making just enough contact with another metal part that the vibration of the engine is causing the noise it would usually go away as the RPMs get higher and the engine is smoother. Just a thought since you've already covered the obvious stuff. Good luck

You probably already checked this, but an exhaust leak has a very distinctive tick that, to me anyway, sounds a bit like a lifter tick. Then again, I am tone deaf and have a decent ring going in both my ears (~20% hearing loss) so take my suggestion with a grain of salt.
