1998 Dodge 2500.jpgThis is my 1998 Dodge 2500 work truck. Has been sitting the last 3 years as a backup since I got a newer one and hasn't had more than 500 miles put on it in the past 3 years. Bought it new in 98, has been a work truck from day one, loaded with tools, air compressor, torch and welder it's been carrying 9500 plus lbs. since day one. The first engine went 450,000 miles when it cracked a head leaking antifreeze so engine was replaced since it started using some oil at around 360,000 miles. Has had nothing but 15W40 diesel oil since day one. Transmission was rebuilt somewhere around 186,000 miles. These are the trucks people called junk. I find such humor when I hear the experts. They decided to call them "Ram" in 2011 and try to take DODGE out of it I guess to fool people into thinking they are driving something better which to me is like putting lipstick on a pig and calling it your prom date. I'm not into the "Politically correct version". They will still be "DODGE" to me until they start putting Italian engines in them (Whatever that is) and then I will be finished with them and go back to the Dodge years. I have a 2012 Dodge Ram and I really like it but I know it will never last like my 1998 did. I put the best of everything fluid wise, (synthetic) in the 2012 truck. Everyone has their own opinion which is great but I will stick to mine and there is no argument to it for me. Make yourself happy and call them what you want but my 2012 is a Dodge Ram!

2012RAM1500RT: Haven't you heard, the ecodiesel is an italian engine.

https://www.dieselarmy.com/engine-tech/engine/an-inside-look-at-the-ram-1500-3-0l-ecodiesel/

I fear your predictions are correct about the long term reilability. I doubt I'll get 23 years out of my 2018. Of course, I probably don't have that left in me either.. LOL
Doesn't surprise me about the ecodiesel, luckily I don't want a diesel so that doesn't affect me "yet". If you think about it since "Ram" wants to get away from Dodge so bad the only true "Ram" is the ecodiesel. It's like the rest of us are driving a 19fowdy Fowd with a three fiddy Chavlay engine! I never knew what to call that brand! Unless this "New Ram Company" thinks they invented the Hemi, the Power Wagon, the Warlock, R/T ect........ I'll stick with Dodge!

Hmmm... maybe I should take another look at the 2000 2500 with 5.9L, 4x4, QCSB with 200K miles for $10K.
The only thing I would say is bad on the 2nd gen Dodge is the cracking dash. Not just the top cover but all of the dash that's made out of plastic. If they made a brand new complete dash for the gen 2 they would probably outlast what they make today twice. Only wish they had put the Hemi in them!

I've read that here and the truck I looked at was a prime example. Other than that and rust starting in the rear wells and exhaust looking a little rough, it was really clean.
Except that it wouldn't start and then it wouldn't stay running after they jumped it lol! Supposed to call me after they put a new battery +/- alternator in her.
I wouldn't have even looked at a vehicle with that many miles except for the praise here, so I might give it a second chance.

With those miles I'd ask about transmission being rebuilt. I love my Mopars but 200,000 miles on an original automatic is most likely on borrowed time. Otherwise the rest is visual in which you make that choice. If it's $10,000 like you said that's kinda on the high side. I live in NC so rust isn't a big issue. Good luck!

Well all good things must come to an end for me. but My 2nd Gen lives on. i am delivering it to it's 2nd owner at 203,000 miles. I've told him about this site, I hope he joins and becomes a contributor to the forums. There is so much to love about the 2nd gen, especially the reliabilty and dependability this truck has given me over the last 24 years. I will miss it!

I know what you mean. I have a 1998 Dodge 2500. Bought new, went 450,000 miles on the first engine (360 gas) now has 489,000 miles, hasn't been driven much in past 4 years since I got a newer one but would drive it anywhere. Makes me chuckle when people say Dodge's are junk!

Well for all the bad mouthing scotty does on chrysler, he did a pretty good job on this piece. I think he confused some things regarding the 5.2 5.9 and v-6 2nd gen. engines. At least that's my impression. But he did mention that the 2nd gen had the largest regular cab. I must agree. I've always had the impression that I had more room in my 2nd gen that I do in my 4th gen cab.

Here is the link. Enjoy the video. Might have to post it in the 4th gen area too.

Happy to see your '97 still going strong.
My '97 is also still going strong nearing 300,000 miles. Same as you I've only had a few things needing replacing. A couple alts, 1 water pump, rad, AIC valve. All untouched engine and trans, it even still has the original starter.
I bought a 2017 Cummins 2500 4x4 so I gave my '97 to my son.
