DISCLAIMER: I am not a coder, developer, software guru, electrical engineer, etc. but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express once!

Since some have had issues with the 4th Gen 8.4 conversion I am looking to gather some details into one thread. I will update as new information is found and posted.

** My plan is to host the software update files for the various 2013-2018 8.4AN's (& 19 classic) so people can update to current versions as needed and make it easier for others to stop chasing down various VINs to get updates **


I am very interested in getting actual P/N's and FW versions from each successful 8.4AN model year (this will help with verifying what we purchase from various vendors and correct FW).

Woe cowboys 14.25.05 is not compatable with 2015 radios do not install it on your radio, if it actually installs there is a very strong chance it will brick it!

The firmware versions for these radios have [different] groups (i.e. branches)

2013-2014-shared the same firmware (pre 17.x fw only!)
2015 - has its own unique firmware
2016 - has its own unique firmware
2017 - has its own unique firmware
2018 - has its own unique firmware (& 19 classic)

** FYI. The latest v18.45.01 update for ALL 13-17 Ra3 VP3-NA and RA4 VP4-NA radios is in a separate thread at the moment & appears to require SW version 17.11.x or higher **

Here you go it is in the Uconnect8.4 directory under Panasonic (non USA Radios). They also have the 21.6 update which might have maps in it since it is over 9GB. I didn't download it since it is not for my US radio.

Confirmed by Austin at NAV repair. 2013 year radios do not have the ability to display compass or outside temp. That was new for 2014 year radios. *EDIT May have changed w/newer FW*

Well folks, my truck is a 2013 SLT and I have successfully updated my

2014 RA4/Vp4-NA (My14 pn:68224525AH)
from 15.26.1 to 16.13.13

Using the 2013-2014 fw uploaded to my RA4 FW Info thread.

- 12 units (files) were updated.
** 20 min Video **

- Text messaging voice dictation still works (vs canned responses)
- Turn by Turn Nav in instrument panel/Evic option still available in settings menu.

- can't confirm Siri Handsfree since I don't have an iPhone (but I can get one if some one knows how to verify Siri Handsfree)

Some have had problems with it and a some have had success using these with the conversion. Doesn't seem to consistently work in 2013, 2014 & some 2015 trucks. NOT RECOMMENDED IN EARLIER TRUCKS

Here is my understanding after several emails with NavRepair Support:
- 68258671xx series 2016 RA4’s are RAM compatible and the latest 2016 FW is v16.09.09 but they do not recommend it for pre-2016 Rams.

Here is what I know so far. There are 3 branches of SW for MY16 radios:

• MY16 Normal – Aries – UF, KL, LA/LD/LX, DS, ZD
• MY16 V2 – Gemini 2 – WK/WD
• MY16.5 – Gemini 3 – RU (minivan) coming soon

The Part# 68258671XX is for WK Vehicles (Grand Cherokee) and it runs Gemini software branch.

The RAM trucks run the DS version . DS vehicles belong to the Aries branch of Software.

So it looks like compatibility issues.

Waiting on more info to confirm.

All the things that I thought I was going to have a problem with, worked!

Text to talk
Apps
Tells Me when I'm speeding...
Weather and Traffic

However, two things aren't working that perturb Me.
It won't populate a list of songs from My Bluetooth device, and I have no SDcard option available on the radio.
Anyone?

So far everything seems to work great. As I have mentioned in previous posts I chose to go with the Canadian RA4 for several reasons. My reasons include no Uconnect access (ie no aircard). This to me is useless as I have apps on my phone and even if I could manage to get a Uconnect subscription I would not. In addition, I do not have to worry about swapping out my mirror for a 911 connect mirror or buying a dummy plug to not get the error message for phone. Also, I do not have to do anything with the current antenna on my truck. The stock antenna features both GPS signal and Sirius/XM.

These CA radios can also be had for a lot less then the NA version. For example, I was able to score this for around $350 shipped from LKQ in Canada. After using car-part.com to locate it, I called and confirmed the VIN through the donor trucks build sheet (obtained here through "equipment listing" Dodge - Contact Us ). The back story on my radio was that it was a brand new 2015 Laramie that was damaged in transit. As a result, I received a brand new radio with the factory screen protector still on. I will caution all who use LKQ and scrapped trucks, check, I repeat, check, the equipment listing. There are a lot of mislabeled radios that are not RA4 but RA3 and vice versa (this could work in your favor as well).

Features of this radio include HD radio, 3D navigation which works great in the lower 48 (NA Maps), Sirius/XM, and Bluetooth. Having gone through the features it appears everything works as to be expected. I have turn by turn directions as well in my instrument cluster (3.5" display).

Having run a 2013 RA4 CA in my old 2014 I can attest that that radio worked great in that truck as well. All the features worked.

Some notes with the 2015 RA4 CA. I was excited to see that I have 5 background themes (unfortunately I could not upload the images of this) and album art for Sirius/XM.

Last note, even though there is an icon for "apps" it takes you to a screen that shows travel link. You can not access travel link nor any apps as you expect for not being connected through the network.

For the 2018 model year RAMS, the 8.4 Radios were changed from the previous VP3/VP4 Harman radios to the 4C/4C-Nav radios made by Panasonic. The biggest advantage of these new 4C Radios is the support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The radios themselves fit the same mount as 2013-2017 RAMS and the radios require no special programming to work. They read the BCM of the truck just like the VP3s/VP4s. However there are some known issues and components that need to be changed to make it work 100%.

FYI... Latest version (V40.1) after v22.60 below is in ClearlyStable's thread (for now) and requires you to update to v22.64 or higher first to avoid bricking the radio (v28.3 recommended first, then v40.1). See my post #215 in his thread for a summary. (SitkneelBend and Lurker55 may be able to help with getting some files)


UAx Reset Methods:
1) Pull the battery or remove the inline fuse near the brake booster.
(may be near pass. side firewall near washer fluid tank on dual battery/Cummins trucks)

2) - Needs Verified - Press/Hold the on screen 'Phone' button and 'upper right corner' together for 15 secs. EDIT: NO GO!

Update for everyone regarding the brand new 2018 8.4" UAQ radio I installed into my 17' Ram 2500 6.7 Tradesman. Upon install I noticed that the navigation would read the distance between turns in kilometers and when it read aloud the speed limit it would say kilometers instead of MPH & miles. But the speed limit sign on the navigation screen would show MPH. Under the "Units" sub menu located in the radio settings I only had distance and it was checked "US" but if you went to "Custom" it was checked km and if I were to check miles it would uncheck itself and quickly re-check km. I enabled (Speed unit CSM) with the Alpha app and it was automatically checked in km/h. Again I could not successfully check MPH without it unchecking and rechecking the km/h. At this point the speed limit sign on the navigation was even SHOWING kilometers. I tried resetting the radio and unhooking both batteries. Nothing worked. Odd thing was with ignition on and truck not running the navigation speed limit settings and navigation distance to destination would show MPH and miles but as soon as I would start the truck it would jump to metric. I used the Alpha OBD app and my OBD link mx and disabled/removed "Speed Unit CSM" AND "Distance Unit CSM". Now the Units sub menu under settings on the radio is gone and the speed limit settings, speed limit warning, speed limit sign, and distance between turns/to destination is all working properly in US. Long post but just in case anyone runs into this issue this was my fix. It has been 24 hours and all still works as it should.

Thanks Tallsilver for sharing. Do you know what year the radios were supposedly from?Hopefully I can get some verified part numbers matched to radio years and verified as RAM radios vs. Cherokee, Dart, Jeep, Challenger, etc. This seems to be a root cause of these kinds of issues imo.

Any RAM tech????

Does a dealer have the option to reload nav if the donor VIN shows it to be a RA4 AN radio??

Navrepair is still working on my first radio, but thinking about asking the service manager if he can reload the NAV without a charge.

I know Getupkid and others recommend upgrading system software, but I would be very careful of that with these donor radios! Upgrading DOES work for most, but it's very frustrating to have a beautiful screen and no NAV.

It's looking like a hardware issue.

Inside certain radios is a 16gb sd card that is notorious for going bad.

We're sending it to our contact who is the lead repair tech for these radios at Chrysler. He'll give us a definitive answer sometime next week.

If you extract the swdl.iso, there is an "etc" folder. inside that folder is a file "ecupart.lua" that file contains all the part numbers for the firmware. That file exists in the MY15_15_17_5 update, not sure about any others.

So, according to the MY15 - 15.17.5 firmware sw file Indaram posted, these are a big chunk of the 8.4 VP4 NA radio P/n's:

Nav database update??

Has anyone downloaded the nav update? Just wondering if it could be installed on one of these failed radios if given the proper info needed to update? I know if you go to their website it ask for the nav info (which is missing) in these radios. Don't know if it would be looking for that info when it looks at the usb drive or not??????

MICRON=15007,
or
SANDISK=15187

(found by poking around in sw files, which I don't recommend to anyone).

Does a dealer have the option to reload nav if the donor VIN shows it to be a RA4 AN radio??

Navrepair is still working on my first radio, but thinking about asking the service manager if he can reload the NAV without a charge.

I know Getupkid and others recommend upgrading system software, but I would be very careful of that with these donor radios! Upgrading DOES work for most, but it's very frustrating to have a beautiful screen and no NAV.

It's looking like a hardware issue.

Inside certain radios is a 16gb sd card that is notorious for going bad.

We're sending it to our contact who is the lead repair tech for these radios at Chrysler. He'll give us a definitive answer sometime next week.

Anyone willing to PM me the VIN they use for their 8.4AN/VP4 NA radio updates?

I need a VIN for each year so that I can download the files regularly and I also want to see if the current files are the same for each year or not (MD5 checksum's equal??).

Just came across an ebay add from OEMautoparts.com (way overpriced) but they list 3 compatible 8.4AN/VP4 NA part numbers for 2013-2015 rams...
