Im installing an aftermarket head unit in a couple of weeks and I wanted to know if installing it will mess up anything on my truck.

I have the factory radio, no 8'' touchscreen, no navigation.
The radio does have the compass built into it, but the compass also in on my dash cluster.

Anyone that has changed out radios in their 13' 1500 please chime in.
Thanks
Heath

I recently replaced mine with a Pioneer AVH-4000NEX. I had the base 5.0 stereo, no nav no alpine.

I used the Metra Harness XSVI-6523-NAV, Metra steering wheel control interface ASWC-1, Metra Dash Kit 95-6518B, Anterna Adapter 12040EU55.

Everything installed really easy. I just made sure I had all the settings for door locks, lights, etc (that you set through the stock stereo), set to where I knew I wouldn't really need to change them. The only thing you lose on the display on your gauge cluster is the time, but the radio displays the time so no big loss. I should point out that I have that fancy 7" customizable display in the center of my gauge cluster (I forget what its called), so I don't know what happens with the other option in the cluster. All the steering wheel controls work except for the phone buttons.

Thanks for the feedback.
I also have the fancy computer display on my gauge cluster.
I was just worried it would mess all that up.

Ill be sure to set up everything on the stock radio before pulling it out.

I bought the metra install kit. It comes with everything but the steering wheel control, but im not too worried about keeping those controls since I have a remote for the aftermarket radio.

just wait... if you use the steering wheel controls now it will be hard to go without.. IMO..

be aware you will have to remove the support behind the radio also to fit an aftermarket into place.

Ive read about the trimming required to fit the aftermarket radio.
I have a dremel that should take care of that real quick.

knowing my skills doing electrical work, theres no way id do anything to a vehicle that is under warranty unless i get it professionally done. That way if anything should go wrong, someone has to fix it.

I worked under an industrial electrician for 3 years.
Im confident in my end of the electrical part.

That's why im asking about any issues I may encounter before actually doing any work to the vehicle.

And I wouldn't be opposed to getting it done professionally if they wouldn't charge me $200+ just to install the radio.
Ive got a long list on the aftermarket and that extra $200 can go several ways. :favorites13:

I haven't replaced mine just yet, but that is coming soon. As others pointed out make sure you have everything set up for options lights/locks/etcbefore you pull it out. Sounds like you already have the harness to make it all easier. Let us know how it comes out. I'll be doing mine as soon as I find something that is Android/Galaxy 5 friendly.
