My 2011 1500 came from the factory with an open rear end. Why they would build a truck without Posi (limited slip) is beyond me.

Can I purchase a posi carrier and install it into this rear end or is the housing different. Leaving the pinion alone and using the same ring gear I should only have to adjust gear mesh using shims, no?

Any insight into this would be appreciated.

Look into a True Trac, the factory limited slip is a bit light duty. There's times a posi isn't really a great option, like on a muddy or icy road,as the diff will lock up and then you're basically t!t$ to the wall if the road makes a sharp bend,as the rear end will try to push the truck straight ahead.
The ZF uses adjusters not shims, and you need the tool to adjust the side play of the ring gear/carrier

Couple video's you can check out listed here.

The tool is true of the Dana 44... I have it. I was looking through my tools recently and found an odd socket from 40 years ago! It's an aluminum lug nut socket for Porsches with true Magnesium lug nuts! Those Porsches were truly street legal race cars, and the wheels and lug nuts were really light weight! Hand loosening and tightening only!

Thanks for the info - I will research it.

Will the True Trac fit into the existing housing? My thought was to pull the open carrier, swap all the components over (may need new bearings as they are pressed on I believe), then reassemble.

The pinion depth theoretically should be fine as I never disturbed it.

When looking for the TrueTrac what differential do I have? Chrysler 9.25?
From my Build Sheet:

3.55 Rear Axle Ratio
235MM REAR AXLE. (235/25.4 = 9.25)
Conventional Differential Rear Axle

I see this one at Summit:

I made that tool for way cheaper .

Just buy a nut and weld it on a bar. I made 2 of them for pennies.

Get a truetrac factory lsd is garbage
I made a similar tool for the Ford 10 inch posi differential out of all thread so I can compress the clutch packs while still in the housing! A real time saver!

Hit up Matt Fikac at Moes for a True Trac,he'll get you set up with everything you need.

Looks like a project for January. Between the carrier and bearings, etc it will be $1,000. Not sure I want to spend that right after the cam/lifter fiasco.

You're lucky as when i put a True Trac in mine,Eaton hadn't yet released a ZF specific True Trac, and back then you had to convert back to the older 9.25 ring and pinion, and buy one extra long axle,so it was @ss puckering expensive especially being in Canada, lol

Wow, yea, if I had to do all of that I wouldn't bother. Simply swapping the ring gear, maintaining any shims, etc and the adjustability of it using that tool seems all too simple.

The last rear end I did was a posi carrier and new ring/pinion in a 10 bolt Pontiac for my 1970 Judge. This appears to be much simpler.

I was pretty well stuck,as the dealer had already put 2 new limited slips in my truck, and told me they weren't sure they could push another one through under warrenty. The factory limited slip does not like water box burn-outs and drag radials, that's their kryptonite, lol.
I ended up buying another diff to work with, and i threw the rebuilt original diff in my shed, where it's been for the last 8.5 years.By the time i was done i had about 3500 into the replacement diff,as i threw all new bearings/seals in it /new ring and pinion / another axle, and then welded on my early Illicit relocation brackets. The Illicit brackets were $750 Canuck and i paid $900 for a front and rear ZF diff, and it was just under $2000 Canuck for the True Trac /gears and axle from Matt at Moes

When I had the rear end in my 2004 rebuilt, the driveline shop recommended a Speedmaster LSD. Said it has 6 worm gears that spread the load better.
This is what they put in

Looks like SpeedMaster ripped off Tru Tracs design. They haven't had an original idea since they were established, but they're famous for stealing other outfits ideas and manufacturing said idea to subpar specs.
If it has SpeedMaster wrote on it run away far and fast

Did you press on the carrier bearings or take the carrier to a shop? Are there shims on the carrier bearings?

Just doing my research.

Thanks

The 1970 Judge package included a 12 bolt diff.

No it did not. Pontiac never released a 12 Bolt for the GTO. Chevy did for the Chevelle.

Mine was a documented '70 Judge, numbers matching with the original build sheet.

I have owned 4 documented Judges through the years and have thoroughly researched the GTO. A Judge never had a 12 bolt. They all came with the BOP, (Buick, Olds, Pontiac) 10 bolt.

We are BOTH correct! :).... The GTO 455 HD came with the 12 bolt.... and since it's been 54 years since they were made well, OOPS! ;)

My 1969 GTO Judge was incorrect, but it had a 455 and 12 bolt 3:31 posi. I retrofitted an Olds 455 built to racing boat specs and had a blast with that car! It would pull the front wheels off the ground when launched!

My '70 was a bone stock, frame off restoration, exact down to every bolt and washer except the interior. I went with black over the stock red. I just didn't like the red.

Ram Air III 4-Speed, 3.55 Posi. I lived in upstate New York at the time with horrible weather so only got to drive it 3 months out of the year. I sold it as part of a downsizing getting ready to move to Florida for retirement.

I don't miss it per se', I guess the car bug has run it's course in my veins but I did gain a skillset that comes in handy when HEMI lifters crap out on you. :)
