Vararam intake is what I would look at myself.

Anything but K&N.
OR, Add a true ram air intake with a tube from a front-facing source into the bottom of the stock airbox. Replace the filter media with a Green or S&B panel and you're good to go for about 25% the cost of a CAI.
Be mindful of the differences in construction of intakes, and what those differences mean to the sound of your truck. Open top warm-air intakes like K&N are very loud at wide open throttler (WOT) but some people like that.

I don't get your post. I.asked the op why he wanted one. He could want one for performance or sound or fuel mileage. Or all of them. You know I'm not a believer that they do anything with a stock truck.

It really depends on if the factory designed a good flowing air box or not.
But most times you are probably correct IMO.

If they really did give better fuel mileage the factory would be using them. Your truck has a good stock box, and supplies more air than your hemi can handle. These might have been good for vehicles in the past. There good for sound and if you think they look cool. Don't expect much more out of it, except a lighter wallet.

Did you even click on the link? I knew you were waiting for the OP to say he wanted better performance...that way you could tell him that they do nothing for performance and are a waste of money. The link I posted is someone who just tested this a few weeks on with a Vararam intake both with and without tuning. He saw gains immediately with just the intake and stock tuning.
Its funny how people who have not even installed an intake on their truck can give advice to others about what does or does not work.

OP, adding an intake likely will not show any real gains in fuel mileage...maybe .5mpg. I have tested everything from the Legmaker mid tube, Legmaker short Ram intake, K&N, S&B, and Vararam. They all show hp gains in certain rpm ranges, but the Vararam wins in overall performance. Behind that would be the S&B. The fit/finish of the S&B is also the best I have seen. K&N is a big name, but their heat shield is not the best...this causes it to suck in engine heat and hurt some of the gains that you would get from an intake with a sealed airbox like the S&B.
In terms of noise, here is how they stack up from loudest to quietest...Legmaker Short Ram, K&N, S&B, Vararam, Legmaker Mid Tube.

So, this whole consensus that CAI's do nothing unless you have a bunch of mods is a load of BS?? Serious question, you work on them every day so I'd rather hear it from you than from some driveway mechanic that just goes along with the Pavlovian affair. I know he did the test a VR intake, but would it stil be around the some with a regular CAI? I wanna get rid of that huge TB hat and make some room, but I also want a CAI that enclosed at the filter to keep mud and other stuff out so the 3rd gen VR intake is no go for me.

I opened the link, something about a 15mph rolling start to 100mph. sounded real scientific to me, but I just go off some scientific data I read about the amount of air the hemi gets from the stock box. I.just go.by common sense, if it was that easy to get hp and fuel mileage gains , the factory would be doing it. I'll try to find the paper on it for you. As for me not having one, the more obvious point is that I'm not selling them.

Chrysler is all about cost effective assembly and managing the throttle noise to a lowest common denominator of noise tolerance--everything is a trade-off aligned with cost and sales.
Why do you think the Hemi intake air pipe is a flex hose? Ease of assembly.
Why do you think the PCV is piped back into the throttle body? Cost. Its a cheap way to meet smog regulations--not the best thing for the engine.
How come the OEM exhaust Y-pipe is mashed together and not free flowing? Cost of assembly, its cheaper and quicker to slap it together than do it right.
Why is the OEM muffler bigger than a ship's anchor? Cheap to build, not too loud for grandma and will outlast the corrosion warranty.
Why doesn't every Ram come with 3.92 gears? CAFE compliance on fleet average fuel economy.
The 5.7L RAM 1500 is pretty good from the factory, but it is not exceptional. There is always room for improvement when you consider the cost saving compromises Chrysler had to make to sell the vehicle.
I'm not selling anything, but I can see the benefit for those who wish to do better than mediocrity. There are still a few things in America that haven't been prohibited by Uncle Sugar (except in Kalifornia where governor Moonbeam has outlawed all fun) and modifying a vehicle after market is still one of them--but its still about choice and each of us deciding what we want to add or not add.
There are reliable references out there from guys who have built their Rams and dyno'd or track tested them. Then there are opinions based on personal feelings, conventional wisdom, or common sense.
Opinions are like buttholes, everyone has one and they all stink--mine too.
