So I get ready to go to work this morning and its about 26 degrees out. I start the truck turn on the heat and set the dial to defrost! All pretty normal. Then I see a message that says "Lamp out" I get out and look and all my lights are on, no bulbs out. I get back in the truck and notice that I have heat coming from all of my vents not just the defrost setting. I turn the dial to all upper vents and I still get heat coming from the foot vents. During my 10 minute drive I can't move the the heat around,it seems the dial doesn't work at all. By the time I get to work the dial is now working and I can move the heat where I want it. Strange! So does the dodge have some kind of setting that uses all vents until a certain temp is reached or is this just a malfunction?

sounds like a blend door that was stuck closed. could be a weak motor that had to heat up to allow it to work.

Is this motor something easy to replace? Any ideas about the bad lamp message that wasn't accurate?

sounds like a stuck door, after a number of years, anything will dry out . Specially under heater/ac conditions. I have no idea how too get to it however. It would make a good diy when you locate it however.

I agree with the others, does sound like something with the blower motor affecting the blend door. I've had the blend door replaced on both of my rams, but my issue was that I had no floor heat and just defrost. I believe the blend door is pretty easy to replace, not sure about the motor though.

I know some of the 3rd gens were bad about having to replace the tail light circuit boards. I know we went through three of them on my buddy's '04 before we got one that would work correctly

the whole dash has to come out in order to get to the blend door motors. There is one blend door that can be reached by dropping the blower motor. heres some useful info.

Dodge Ram 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, blend door auto AC heat replacement part

here is what you will be looking at for the replacement

and here is what you will be replacing, i circled the blower motor on the bottom to show you what you will need to remove to get the broken recirc door out.

my man awedaniel found a kit where he just replace the broken door with a aftermarket one made of metal, it cost 130.00 and took him 1.5 hours to change it out. replacing the whole assembly looks to be a few beers long

sounds like a computer thing. Reason I say so is because the lamp out thing and can't control the HVAC.

Gf jumped in the truck one day and started to crank the knobs real quick & hard. I'm like wtf, Don't jump in a ride and start turning things with so much force! You want heat/cool whatever, turn it like a human! Not an ape! or in her case a chimpanzee!.lol.
Man I know ya got to take it easy with the temp knobs, (in any vehicle). jmho.

When you checked the lights did you check the blinkers and brakes? You might have to pull the bulbs and make sure they were not starting to melt giving you the lamp out light.

I can so relate to that. There is also only a certain amount of force required to shut a door (be it a house, vehicle, or a cabinet). There is a reason why some things last for some people, and the same thing breaks for others.

Back on the topic: That seems VERY odd.
My thought would be "Hope it doesn't happen again"

also a loose filement(sp) in the bulb can also cause the light out to come on occasionally.

Well one problem solved.... I turned on the truck tonight and walked around it and found a tail light out. So now I know where my "lamp out" message is coming from. I see a trip to Auto Zone in my future tomorrow. Thanks for all the help.
