IMG_0737.jpegDamage is on the upper 1/3 of the tailgate. Body shop quotes me $875 because they’d have to repaint the whole upper 1/3. Is this a reasonable estimate?

You need to back up and do a couple far, near pics and overall pic? Hard to know anything on that macro pic.

I had to crop the pic down to almost nothing because the original file was too big

Lower the picture quality of camera you are using to standard JPEG. If on I Phone, you have to change from I think extension is EFIC to JPEG in settings on phone. IF U have to use program like adobe to downgrade photo, or U can download program called GIMP, is public, and put pictures in there, and Export photos with JPEG extension and U can downgrade size that way. But we gonna need overall pic of rear of truck, and a near pic of area, that macro image is useless for any estimate.

ALSO U may want to pm @Rado in this forum. He is from Maine and may have an insight as to prices charged in your area.

It's only reasonable if you're willing to pay it.

If it was me, I'd just touch it up myself as it doesn't look that big from the pictures, but like boird said a better picture would be helpful. It is a truck after all.

You could always keep an eye out at local junkyards or marketplace for a used one in the same color.

In the Bangor area I would say that is normal ! Maybe $1000.00 ! To try and blend a small section will usually show a bit of a difference in paint ! So that IMO is their reason painting the whole tailgate ! They may spot paint it for you if you ask but it would not be perfect! And I bet that would be $500.00 + range ! Today a shop prefers a Higher paying job ! Where in Maine are you ?

Is the metal damaged in any way ? torn, dented, or anything besides Paint ?

I would remove the Tailgate & Tailgate Handle, then take it to a body shop or two & get quotes

That way, you still have transportation & the body shop does not have your vehicle taking up space.

A copy of the estimate would also help. It probably includes labor hours for repair and paint work, materials such as paint, shop supplies, and replacement decals and emblems. Cost seems reasonable as time charges can be $100 or more an hour for body work. But would expect them to paint entire tailgate, not sure why they would only paint 1/3.

Maybe ole well known body shop begins with a "M", not wanna put name, not want any issues. Yeah painting 1/3 of a tailgate is silly, easier to paint all than to try and blend and match. OP we still need betta pics than the macro U posted.,

I have a little dent like that in my tailgate and I was quoted 1800 to fix it and replace the bumper. I left it and bought a Ranch Hand bumper and grill guard instead. I decided it's a pickup truck in the country and nobody's going to care. I can't see it from the drivers seat.

I was recently made aware of a product that covered a little bit more of the tailgate… My truck has some damage that I suspect is higher than yours, but in case this would benefit you, I just ordered this as I am 95% sure it will hide any of the damage on my truck

I have a small dent in L/R pax door. Been there since I bought the truck, was dented on the lot b y whomever. Had dealer get me TT Controls, install and flash TT controls, and took labor price off of Install of side steps. All of this done on Dealer's dime. So that dent still there, yup it is a truck, LOL.

Normally I would consider touch up paint but I’m concerned about the flaking paint. Not sure how to handle that myself.

As you know our Maine Temps are going to be nasty for awhile
DIY job would be OK but IMO not perfect !

Personally I would save up and have a shop do it !
They will be pretty close IMO
A shop in Bangor did some touch up on my buddy's truck and they did blend it pretty good, You have to really look hard to see a difference

I can't really tell what damage you have, Price out a can of paint these days ,its shocking .
I bought a small touch up spray can for mine, it was over $20, and then you need a can of clear coat . 10 yrs ago those where 6.00 You can't paint cold steel and expect a good job.

I don't know about Main, But the temp here is -25 c this morning.
